Matariki Stars

Matariki is a group of stars.

There are several thousand stars in the Matariki group of stars.

You can see the Matariki stars in late May or early June in the NZ night sky.

In NZ we can’t see the Matariki stars in April. They  appear again in late May or early June.

When the Matariki stars are seen, then we know it is the start of the Maori New Year. People celebrate Matariki by planting trees and winter plants, learning about their tupuna, making and flying kites and sharing food and stories with their family.
