The Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge of Hartford is taking applications for the  Youth Conservation Corps program this summer.  If you are at least 15 years of age and want work experience in a national parks and wildlife refuge and fish hatcheries this could be for you.  To find out more about this program contact Mr. Taylor in the Guidance Department.  Applications are due today.

GSA, Gender & Sexuality Alliance, students are participating in the National Day of Silence which brings awareness to the issues LGBTQ people face on a daily basis. In honor of Day of Silence, students have taken a vow of silence physically and on social media.

Stats for the day:

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth are more than twice as likely to experiment with drugs and alcohol. [1] LGBT Students who report having a greater number of supportive staff (six or more) had higher GPAs. School clubs provide safe spaces and support networks for LGBT students. Students who attended schools with GSAs reported fewer homophobic remarks, more intervention from school personnel and a greater sense of connectedness.

Emporia freshman debaters Kaylie Esquivel and Riona Granado took second place at the Augusta High School Invitational debate tournament on Saturday.  Forty-two teams representing 15 schools competed in the tournament. The pair have 16 wins with only 4 losses on the season. They have placed top 3 at 5 of 6 tournaments this year.

EHS Theatre will be holding a Thespian Gala tomorrow night from 7-8:30, it will be a showcase of different students performing their monologues, duets, or songs that they will be taking to Thespian conference! Admission is free, come on out and see these talented students!

Emporia High freshmen Kaylie Esquivel and Riona Granado placed 3rd at the Goddard Eisenhower Novice Invitational on Saturday. The pair have now medalled 3 times out of 4 this season.  Senior Lena Mose and sophomore partner Kathryn Rosa picked up their 6th bid to the Kansas Debate Coaches Invitational. The tournament held at Wichita East High in January is the state all-classification debate championship.

We see many examples of others Answering the Call.  Oprah Winfrey, seeks out social issues where she can make a difference.  Whether it is starting a school for girls in African or giving money to multiple other humanitarian efforts.  However, you don't have to be rich and famous to make a difference.  A smile, kind word, or helping hand speaks volumes about your characters and makes a major difference is someone else's life. 

Attention students requesting schedule changes:  On Thursday and Friday, counselors will not be calling into the classrooms for you during finals, so if you still need to see your counselor for a schedule change, please come to the guidance department after you complete your final.

The famous actor Jim Carrey would never have been successful if he had set limits for himself.  He overcame poverty and an unhealthy family life to become one of the most well known faces in Hollywood.  He is proof that you are never defined by your circumstances.
