Bangalore 5 May, 2017 Jhatkaa.org, a Bangalore-based digital advocacy group, launched Air A!ert, a distributed campaigning platform that will allow everyday Indians to start, run and win campaigns on air pollution. At a time when India has the highest number of premature deaths due to air pollution in the world, Air A!ert gives power to the people to hold corporates, governments and individuals accountable for tackling this issue.
“The air pollution issue has become a national crisis, so we’re going all in. This is the first time we’ve done anything like this. We’ve launched petitions, viral videos, social media campaigns; but we’ve never built a new campaigning platform around a single issue,” said Bhavik Lathia, Campaign Manager, Jhatkaa.org
In addition to starting online petitions on the platform, campaign starters can send emails to supporters, run missed call efforts, host events, and more.
“This platform is about giving everyday Indians the tools and strategies they needs to address air pollution, in ways both big and small. Citizens can start campaigns to end garbage burning in their own neighborhood or to replace every dirty bus in their state. They can even petition the central government or multinational corporations,” Lathia added.
Air A!ert also has resources on how to build successful campaigns. “Jhatkaa has a track record of running and winning digital campaigns. With Air A!ert, we want to take the expertise we’ve built since our launch and put it in hands of our members,” Lathia said.
Jhatkaa.org is calling on other NGOs, civil society groups, scientists, influencers, parents, children, and anyone to start campaigning on air pollution issues that they face everyday.
Over the past couple months, Jhatkaa.org has been surveying members on how air pollution impacts their lives, and what steps they would take to tackle this crisis.
“We were blown away by the response. Thousands responded with not only heartbreaking stories but inspiring ideas. With Air A!ert, they can take these ideas and put them into action. With passionate minds and strategic ideas, Air A!ert will help individuals and communities get together for a cleaner, more sustainable India,” he concluded.
Jhatkaa.org is a campaigning organisation committed to building grassroots citizen power across India in effective and innovative ways. Jhatkaa.org helps people take action collectively on issues that interest or affect them, and create change that would not be possible if they acted alone.
Jhatkaa.org also collaborates with civil society to engage citizens to hold corporate, cultural and government leaders accountable in real time at key decision moments through various digital communication platforms. Read more about Jhatkaa.org’s victories and press hits.
