“Believe me, nobody beats Haman like Trump!”

(Donald Trump on Purim)

In the Beginning

Ted Cruz was born on December 22, 1970 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was named Rafael Edward Cruz. The family lived in Calgary for three years and was working in the oil industry as owners of a seismic-data processing firm for oil drilling. Cruz's father, Rafael Bienvenido Cruz, was born in Cuba. His paternal grandfather, Rafael, immigrated to Cuba as an infant with his parents from the Spanish Canary Islands. The Canary Islands have been know as a refuge place for Jews. The first Jewish immigrants to the Canary Islands were Conversos from Spain and Portugal seeking refuge from the 1492 Expulsion and the consequent persecutions and the Inquisition. Another large wave followed in the 17th century, mainly from Portugal. Cruz’s mother, Eleanor Elizabeth (Darragh) Wilson, was born in Wilmington, Delaware. She is three quarters of Irish descent and one quarter of Italian descent. Eleanor’s middle name, “Darragh,” means in northern Irish the ”black one” or “of an oak tree,” suggesting a darker skin complexion. Italians as well as European Jews are known for their darker skin complexion. And Italy has been known for on-going waves of Jewish immigration in and out. Cruz has said: “If you will not stand with Israel and the Jews, then I will not stand with you.” (wiki+)

Could Rafael-Ted possible be a descendant of Crypto-Jews?

The Weekly Riddle

Which is colder the South Pole or the North Pole?

(Guess before you take a peek. The answer on the back page)

From the Rabbis and Beyond…

Daf Bite  –

The second Mishna in Massekhet Kiddushin (14b) leaves the realm of marriage and focuses on the status of an eved ivri - a Hebrew slave - and specifically on how such slaves are acquired and how they are granted their freedom. Ordinarily, a male Hebrew slave is acquired by means of kesef (money) or shetar (a contract), and leaves slavery after six years of work, or when the yovel (the Jubilee year) arrives or by paying back the value of his remaining years.

Rav Question –

If you are against products made in Judea & Samaria, and you receive Mishlowah Manot with such products, what will you do with it? Eat it yourself? Give it away? Throw it to the garbage? Give it to a none-Jew? Take it to a protest? Will you be honest and share your choice with the giver, who is your friend?

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Mila NOT baParasha - Tsav  / צב

The largest living turtle (chelonian) is the leatherback sea turtle

(Dermochelys coriacea - in the picture), which reaches a shell length of 200 cm (6.6 ft) and can reach a weight of over 900 kg (2,000 lb). Freshwater turtles are generally smaller, but with the largest species, the Asian softshell turtle Pelochelys cantorii , a few individuals have been reported up to 200 cm (6.6 ft). This dwarfs even the better known alligator snapping turtle, the largest chelonian in North America, which attains a shell length of up to 80 cm (2.6 ft) and weighs as much as 113.4 kg (250 lb). (wiki)

***

The Mila/word in the parasha which sounds closer is Tsaw - צו, meaning “to give ‘order!’” But if you pronounce “ו” in the Sephardic/Biblical way as “waw” instead of the Ashkenazi/Israeli way as “ vav” then there is a clear difference between צב (turtle) and צו (to order).

Parasha: Vayikra (Leviticus) – Tsav 6:18:36

Historical Context: Bnei Israel's 40 year journey continues. Location: Midbar Sinai. Creation Time: 2448 (approx. 1476 bce). Parashort: The priests were given instructions as to their function in the Tabernacle and more about the sacrifices they were to supervise or bring. Dedication ceremonies for the new Tabernacle were begun. (TorahFroductions.com)

Haftara:  Tsav - Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah), 7:21-8:3; 9:22-9:23

Haftit: The Haftara discusses how Hashem will not accept the sacrifices from the Jews who do not obey him. Hashem is also angered because Jeremiah had repeatedly warned the Jewish people to stop their collective self-deception, only to be ignored.

The Haftara never ends on a sad note; it always has a happy ending with a glimmer of hope for the Jews.  The Haftara concludes with two verses conveying a happier message from God. “Let no man glory in his own achievements or in his own riches, but let him rejoice in his earnest devotion to me. For I the Lord act with Chesed, kindness, Mishpat, judgment, and Tzedakah, charity, in the world; for in these I delight, declares the Lord.”

Connection to the Parsha: Parshat Tzav deals with laws pertaining to Korbanot, Animal Sacrifices. This Haftara discusses the opposite. We hear how Hashem will not accept sacrifices in place of obeying His will. (haftorahman.com)

Speechless in the Parasha - Tsav

The parasha continues with the description of various sacrifices which include animals as well as grain products, such as bread, matsa, crackers, etc. Can you identify in the text any vegetables or fruits which may be used with the sacrifices?

Jewish World - New arrivals from Yemen

17 Yemenite Jews secretly airlifted to Israel this week and a historic mission. The group comprised the final batch of approximately 200 Yemenite Jews brought to Israel by the Jewish Agency in recent years, the organization said.

Two other members of the tiny community arrived in recent days as well. The olim brought with them an old Torah Scroll believed to be close to 800 years old.

The operation was carried out in secret due to the unstable security situation in Yemen, growing anti-Semitism and hostility against Jews and logistical difficulties. The Jewish Agency therefore needed the help of the U.S. State Department, which has also assisted in previous immigration operations.

The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa was closed due to the war in Yemen and so the U.S. State Department had to ask officials in Yemen and the region to securely organize the group for departure through neighboring countries.

Approximately 50 Jews now remain in Yemen, with 40 living in Sanaa in a compound adjacent to the American Embassy. Despite the ongoing civil war, they refuse to leave the country.

Yemenite Jews started returning to Israel, after more than 2000 years in the Galut, in 1882 at the same time that the First Aliya from Europe took place. A big wave of olim arrived after the Israel’s Independence in 1948 with approximately 50,000 people.

Time to Smile

17 Jews from Yemen made aliya to Israel this week. The first thing they did upon arrival was to kiss the ground. The second was to open a new bet-kneset.

Riddle Solved

“The South Pole is much cooler than the North Pole. Actually the Antarctic temperatures are so low that snow never melts in some parts of this continent. The average yearlong temperature of this region is -49˚ Celsius, which makes it the coldest place on Earth. In contrast, the average winter temperature in the Arctic region is -34˚ Celsius, and goes up by a few degrees during summer.”

So in a way we can say that the North Pole is cooooooold and the South Pole is freeeeeeeeeeeezing cold. (listverse.com)
