Implementation
We use the geography curriculum produced by BBCET which we adapt to suit our school and pupils. This curriculum fulfills the requirements of the national curriculum and provides a sequence of units which build on knowledge, concepts and ideas over time. Geography is taught as a discrete subject. Geography work is recorded in Geography books so the children are always clear about what curriculum subject they are learning. Geography alternates with History and is taught during the second half of each term. Each year group will cover 3 Geography topics.
Understanding of Human and physical geography and place knowledge are built into the curriculum at local, national and global scale. Children use fieldwork to enhance this knowledge and to apply it in the wider context - examples of this are local walks to look at human and physical features, map work and data collection and representation. Through the curriculum they meet and revisit geographical concepts such as cause and effect, sustainability and physical processes.
At the beginning of each lesson, children recall knowledge they gained in the previous lesson. At the end of each unit there is an assessment task or quiz that enables teachers to assess the children’s understanding and progress.
Impact
At St Robert’s we want our children to love learning and be curious about the world around them. Our curriculum is knowledge rich and as they learn, children will acquire and develop Geographical skills and understanding. Through our curriculum our children will develop a sense of their world and their place in it, beginning with their locality and progressing to a national and global scale; understanding the interconnections between people and the environment.
