How to create a new project

This is a co-creation document

If you contribute to this doc make sure you respect the Content rules

Creating a project and kickstarting a project are two very different things. This document only deals with the act of creating the space for a project in SENSORICA’s content management system and NRP-VAS system.  See more on kickstarting a project.

NOTE: at this moment creating a new project is not straightforward... In the near future we’ll make it one button and a short form to fill, a one minute process. If you have suggestions please share them with the community.

Initial notes

Distinction between CRM and NRP-VAS

CRM, or content management system, is the system we use to manage our digital assets for the project: R&D documents, design files, manuals, pictures, etc. At this moment, this system is a combination of different services, like Google Drive, Google Site, Youtube, Picasa, Diigo, etc…

NRP-VAS, or network resource planning system, is a system that allows project participants to log their contributions and to plan and co-manage the project. At this moment, this system is HERE.

What are projects?

See our working definition.

Who can creates projects?

Only SENSORICA affiliates can create projects. An affiliate subscribes to the rules underlying the value accounting system. [1]

To become a SENSORICA affiliate contact the community.

Procedure

CRM - Create a project page on SENSORICA website

NOTE: a project is a serious thing. Take a look at the list of projects and see if you can find one that suits you. You might want to create a sub-project.

You need to be a registered member and have Edit access to the website. Ask an active affiliate for this permission.

NOTE: you can propose changes to the Project template. Please consult with the community. To edit the template go to Manage Site and chose Page templates on the left side menu. Click on Project under User created templates. Or simply click here (need to be logged in).

You’ll find other instructions in the template related to the value accounting, database and knowledge base.

CRM - Add the project to the information and knowledge management system

[this system is under development now... ]

CRM - Allocate a space for this project into the Database

NOTE: You need to get access to the SENSORICA shared folder.

The database is where files associated with the project live. At this moment we’re using Google Drive.

CRM - Add the project to the Diigo knowledge base

NOTE: you need an invitation to edit SENSORICA knowledge base on Diigo.

Decide on a tag to associate things you find on the web with this particular project. The syntax we usually work with is ProjectName_project

See our Diigo knowledge base

See example for the Mosquito project

CRM - Create path to market for project

If this project is about creating a new product you also need to create a path to market for it, represented by a page on SENSORICA’s website, tightly associated with the project page.

While on SENSORICA’s website in edit mode, go to the project page and create a new page.

Make sure you name this page properly, using the syntax ProjectName Path to market.

Use the template Path to Market for this page, in order to inherit the proper structure.

Make sure you put this page under the proper project.

Click the CREATE button. You will be able to edit the Path to market page. Don’t forget to invite other members to contribute.

CRM - Create NRP-VAS page for the project

All projects have a VAS (value accounting system) page associated with them. This page is tightly related to the Project page.

While on SENSORICA’s website in edit mode, go to the project page and create a new page.

Make sure you name this page properly, using the syntax ProjectName VAS.

Use the template Project VAS for this page, in order to inherit the proper structure.

Make sure you put this page under the proper project.

Click the CREATE button. You will be able to edit the Project VAS page. Don’t forget to invite other members to contribute.

NRP-VAS - Create a project in SENSORICA’s NRP-VAS

Before you can complete the task of creating a VAS page on SENSORICA’s website, you need to create the project in SENSORICA’s NRP-VAS. Instructions are in the wiki, on SENSORICA’s VAS tutorials page.

NRP-VAS - Set up the workflow recipes

NOTE: still experimental, but hopefully this will become the norm. Ask Tibi, Lynn or Bob for more.

We[2] created two parallel process groups, called workflow recipes. They represent a product development methodology and should contain almost all the processes you’ll need to create in SENSORICA’s NRP-VAS system. Use these workflow recipes to create a template of all the work that needs to be done from ideation to product. See the wiki to learn how to create or modify methodologies, or how to use one for your new project.

This diagram explains how these 2 workflows bridge together.

Create a sub-project

If you find a project that suits you, you might want just to create a sub-project. Start by creating a document on the main folder of the project and link to it from the website. If this sub-project evolved you can create a web-page for it later.

Kickstart the project

After completing all the tasks above, you are now ready to kickstart the project.

[1] still need to formalize these rules! see SENSORICA normative system
