This was a difficult week, as the initial weigh-in was immediately followed by a four-day weekend. However, you all did a great job and you are well on your way to success!
One key change we can make is to get moving (or increase or change up our exercise routine). Some of our participants recommended walking/hiking trails they have found particularly nice:
Daley Ranch in Escondido
Double Peak in San Marcos (I’m told a bit more of a hike)
There are also individuals that walk the track and there is always our wonderful fitness center. In addition, we have the free exercise activities offered to support our journey. They include:
Circuit Training on Wed. at 7:00 am in Room G8
Jazzercise on Fridays at noon in Room G8
In addition, we are working on adding a Cross-fit type of activity on Wednesday nights. I will keep you informed of our progress on this.
Great work this first week. Let’s get healthy!
How did everyone do with the first week goal? Did you get moving? This could include increasing workouts for those already hitting the gym, trying one of the activities offered by Team Life or simply parking further away at the grocery store to add a few steps. Any positive change is worthwhile!
The next thing to focus on is diet. We’ll start easy and simply focus on beverages. Make sure you are drinking a lot of water. This alone can lead to weight loss. If this is something you already do, then think about what else you are drinking. Is it worth the calories? Does it provide any nutrition at all?
Did you know that even one daily soft drink may be hazardous to your health. People who drank one or more sodas daily were almost 50 percent more likely to have risk factors for metabolic syndrome. Characterized by obesity, excessive fat around the waist, low levels of good cholesterol, and high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome doubles your chances of heart disease or stroke and can also lead to diabetes. For more information on this, visit http://www.alive.com/articles/view/21736/the_hard_truth_about_soft_drinks.
We can make healthy choices that will improve our health and extend our lives.
Good work with Week 2 changes. Here’s to a very productive Week 3. Let’s get healthy!
We are now beginning week 4 of our contest? How is it going for you? Have you made any change to your diet or exercise routine? We’d love to hear from you!
If you have found that you are not losing as fast as you had hoped, consider keeping track of your food consumption and exercise. Did you know that medical studies show that keeping a journal DOUBLES your weight loss!
One tool I really like to use is an application on my iphone from www.myfitnesspal.com. The application is completely free and helps me easily keep track of calories consumed and calories burned through exercise. I know that I am definitely more aware of what I am putting into my body when I am keeping a journal. In addition, I can see what type of exercise is giving me the most bang for my buck. For instance, if I choose to jog (5 mph) on the treadmill for 30 minutes, I could burn about 283 calories. However, if I spent that same 30 minutes on the elliptical (with resistance) I could burn 400 calories.
As you can see, as a whole we are moving in the right direction. I challenge you to try keeping a journal this week and see how much more you can lose during Week 4. Let’s get healthy!
We are now beginning week 5 of our contest? The next weigh-in will be your midway point. Are you where you’d like to be? Don’t feel discouraged if you have an off-week. Everyone experiences fluctuations. You are on the right path. Stick with it and you will see results.
How many of you feel you are getting enough fruits and vegetables each day? They are such an important part of our diet, yet statistics show that at least 3 out of 4 Americans do not. I’ve linked a great article which gives many fun ideas on how to eat more fruits and vegetables, including lots of great recipes.
What I’ve found to be the easiest way to assure my family gets these desired nutrients is to make green smoothies. My kids even ask for them now - that’s a very big deal! I start every day with one whipped up fast and simple in my blender. I fill half of the blender with fresh spinach, then add a banana, an apple or pear, a handful of frozen strawberries and about a cup of water. That’s it! It’s easy, very nutritious, and delicious! You can add any fruits/vegetables you like. Breaking the produce down in the blender provides faster absorption and all the fiber fills you up. Here’s a link with more information if you’re interested.
Try to amp up your consumption of fruits & vegetables this week. Let’s get healthy!
We are halfway through our contest. As a reminder, there will be no weigh in next week due to Spring Break. Keep motivated - you are making progress!
One of our Biggest Loser participants sent me a great link yesterday that I’d like to share with you.

We didn’t have Week #6 results due to Spring Break. So, this is following a week off. We still went down, overall, so that’s great!
We only have three weeks left. Let’s make the most of it. Try to attend some of the free fitness classes if possible, or walk around the track. It’s going to be a beautiful week. Get outside and take advantage of it!

If your partner isn’t keeping up with you...help them. Exercise together or talk about success strategies. Remember, there are individual as well as top team prizes. There will be cash prizes for the top 3 teams and also the biggest male and female losers.
