Here is what’s happening this week!

ELA

Sarah Reams

This week, students finished reading “Lamb to the Slaughter” and took an assessment on the story. They also began morphology by examining the root “act.” Finally, students are half way through their book club novel!

Math

Zach Allen

This week, we continued with our unit on exponent rules.  So far, students have learned how to apply exponent rules to single digit positive integers or one letter variable bases.  We also looked at how to use a scientific calculator to evaluate expressions with exponents.  Math support in science is focusing on how to classify angles and angle pair relationships.  

Science

Shawn Bourque

This week, students are building community within the classroom, establishing classroom routines, and finishing their first group assignment in pathogens. Students will take a formative assessment for immediate feedback on their learning thus far. Students are encouraged to review their vocabulary on Infinite campus.

September 9th and the16th will be the last Mondays for after school tutoring for the refresher for the four basic operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. For the students that have been attending there has been great progress made.

Social Studies

  • This week we are reviewing classroom routines and procedures to ensure we have a safe, positive and consistent classroom community throughout the year.
  • Next week we will be beginning Unit 1: Historical Thinking and U.S. and N.C. Geography.

This week, AVID students began a new unit on college and career research. Students defined “success” and what it means to them. They also completed a interest survey that suggested potential careers, then they researched colleges that offered degrees in those programs.

In medical detectives we are starting our second unit in disease detectives. Students will learn about the secrets of the nervous system..

Zach Allen

This week, students continued to explore concepts in programming through different activities with Microbits.  We also looked at current issues with cyber security and discussed how to use online tools and resources effectively and safely.    

Financial Literacy

Diana Jones

We are beginning this class with a project on the complexities of budgeting when going through adulthood. In this project students will determine what college and career path they would like to take.  Then they will determine what  they want and also need to spend their earned income on. Lastly, they will determine a monthly budget and strategies for saving and spending money.

Beth Burroughs

Learning terms and definitions that will be important throughout our unit. Making predictions on career choices, living situations, types of vehicles, cost of living….
