Course Description

This course makes a comparative and analytical study of the parallel history of Mexico and the United States. It starts with the beginning of colonization in each of the respective countries, the European immigration, the loss of territory or the annexation of territory, and the political and economic results of all of these factors and events.

Course Objectives

The course will look at all of the aspects of relations between the US and Mexico from a political, economic, and social viewpoint.

• The European migration and the development of the 13 colonies
• The independence of the US and Mexico
• The formation of the states: the United States and Mexico
• The Monroe Doctrine and is repercussions in Mexico and Latin America
• Annexation problems of California, New Mexico and Texas to the US
• Benito Juárez
• The US invasion of Mexico
• The reform and Benito Juárez
• The “Porfiriato” and the role of the US embassy
• The economic aspects of the “Porfiriato”
• The mining companies and the “deslindadotas”
• The Mexican Revolution
• Madero, “Huertismo”, and the relation with the US embassy
• Cardena, petroleum, agricultural development and education development in Mexico and the US
• Revolutionary nationalism: Adolfo López Mateos, Luis Echeverría, and José López Portillo
• Neoliberalism: cooperation with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), etc.
