      Winter Gardening

In Indiana all of our fresh produce is shipped from states that are much warmer.  Produce is picked, put on a truck, travels 4-8 days to make it to your supermarket shelf.  This really isn’t that fresh.

Problem:   Obtaining fresh produce as soon as it is ready to be picked all year long.

You will have to research these topics:  when researching you will need to prove that your sources are reliable sources.  You will use a google form for this.

Process: Your team of 4 has to design a way to have a hydroponic, self-watering garden that will yield produce for the class to eat, using 2 liter bottles.

*You will use Google slides .  Your team needs to name your project. *This will be on your first slide.  The name must be related in some way to the project.  

*All research, pictures, and data will be on the shared google slides.

*All research must be put through the reliable questions form.
*
All research must be cited.

Each slide you work on must have your name on it.

Day 1--  Decide on your team, choose project name,  choose what topic you will each research, and begin research.    All  research will be recorded on Google slides.

1st slide  project name and all people in project

2nd slide should be the vegetables you chose and a picture of them.

Day 2-- Your team will continue to research and begin the design process of your hydroponic garden.

Day 3--  Have all your materials at school and begin building.

Day 4 -- Test to see if the garden in self watering.  Plant your seeds

Day 5-- take any pictures and put finishing touches on garden. Cover seed with saran wrap to help with germination.

Day 8-12-- remove saran wrap and place under grow light or in window sill.

Day 10-- measure plant growth and explain what is happening in the your plant at this time.

Day 17-- measure and write observations of what is happening in your plant.

Each week keep track of the process of the plant growth, when it produces vegetables and what they look like.

A graph must be included to show some type increase or decrease in the project.  (plant growth, water usage, weight of plant)

At the end of the project the Google slides is due.

7.LS.1 Investigate and observe cells in living organisms and collect evidence showing that living things are made of cells. Compare and provide examples of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.  Identify the characteristics of living things.
