Historical Fiction: Writing Your Author’s Note

As you know, historical fiction is often accompanied by an author’s note. This note can serve several purposes, including….

·      Explaining why an author chose her subject matter

·      Updating readers on an issue or event described in the story

·      Raising awareness or offering readers a way to help

·      Providing additional historical context and confirming historical accuracy

Think about your story. How did you choose your characters and setting? What inspired your plot?  As you answer these questions, decide which of the above bullets you’d like to focus on in your note. Then, get started drafting!

Your author’s note should be a maximum of 5 sentences long.
