Freaky Girl Socks KAL

Tabi Socks

What I did:

  • Knit a regular vanilla sock - 64 stitches on 2.25mm, german short row heel, stockinette
  • Used this free recipe on ravelry to knit the toes, after I’d knit to my desired length minus 4cm
  • Shortened the big toe by two rows, the foot of the sock by 4 rows

Miu miu cut off socks

Fingering weight

Cast on 64 stitches on 2.25mm, or your preferred needle & stitch count, using a long tailed cast on or cast on of choice. Knit for 20 rows in 1x1 rib.

Knit in stockinette to your desired cuff length. Then, work a german short row heel or heel of your choice.

After the heel, knit to halfway across your foot length (e.g. if your foot measures 25cm, knit to 12cm).

Bind off with your preferred edge stitching:

  • 4 rows of 1x1 rib + italian bind off
  • 1 row in purl, then bind off knits over knits to prevent the edge from rolling
  • I-cord bind off

Simone Rocha cut out socks [a]

Fingering weight

Cast on 64 stitches on 2.25mm, or your preferred needle & stitch count, using a long tailed cast on or cast on of choice. Knit for 20 rows in 1x1 rib (or 5cm).

Note: Bear in mind, if you’re following this pattern exactly, you’ll likely need more stitches at cast on to go round the calf as the sock ends up being longer than usual. You’ll decrease some of these extra stitches later.

Knit in stockinette in the round for 8.5cm, whilst at the same time decreasing at the beginning and end of two rows across the length of the stockinette portion. So,

  • Knit for 6cm
  • Do a decrease round: knit 1, k2tog, knit to 3 stitches before EOR, ssk, k1
  • Knit for 2cm
  • Do second & final decrease round

Note: when working the second sock, you may want to move the decreases to the middle of round so that the decrease curve is inversed, as follows:

  • Knit across 29 stitches, k2tog, k2, ssk, knit to EOR

Beginning the cut out:

When you’ve knit the leg of the sock to your desired length, begin binding off to form the cut out:

[if you’re working magic loop, it helps to separate your stitches across the two needles, with 30 stitches on each]

Row 1: Knit 14 stitches, cast off 2, knit to end of round

Row 2: Knit 14 stitches, turn. You are now working flat.

Row 3 (WS): Cast off 2 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 4 (RS): Cast off 2 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 5 (WS): Cast off 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 6 (RS): Cast off 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 7 (WS): Cast off 2 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 8 (RS): Cast off 2 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 8 (WS): Cast off 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 10 (RS): Cast off 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 11-12: Work two rows in stockinette.

Row 13 (WS): Cast off 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 14 (RS): Cast off 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 15-17: Work three rows in stockinette.

Row 18 (RS): Cast off 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 19 (WS): Cast off 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 20-21: Work two rows in stockinette.

Row 22 (RS): Cast off 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 23 (WS): Cast off 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 24-25: Work two rows in stockinette.

Row 26 (RS): Cast off 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 27 (WS): Cast off 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

You have now finished the shaping of half of the cut out, and the leg section. You should have 6 stitches on one needle, with a large cut out section in between, and 30 stitches on the second needle (36 stitches total). You will continue on a RS row.

Row 28 (RS): Knit across 3 stitches on your first needle. Switch to second needle, then work a german short row heel over those 30 stitches or heel of your choice. Make sure the heel construction doesn’t include knitting across one full row over the other needle.

German short row heel over 30 stitches

  • You have 30 stitches across one needle.
  • Knit across 30 stitches, turn
  • Purl across 30 stitches, turn
  • Knit to 1 st before the last double stitch, turn
  • Purl to 1 st before the last double stitch, turn
  • Repeat the last two rows until you have 10 double st, 10 regular st, 10 double st on the needle
  • Knit to 1st before the double stitch, knit the double st (meaning, work it as a regular stitch), knit the next double st, turn
  • Purl to 1st before the double stitch, knit the double st (meaning, work it as a regular stitch), knit the next double st, turn
  • Repeat the last two rows until all the double st have been worked

After you have turned the heel, finish your row over the second needle: knit 3 stitches, turn.

You will now be increasing in the exact same way that you decreased, across the foot of the sock.

Row 29 (WS): Cast on 1 st in purl using the knitted cast on method, purl to EOR.

Row 30 (RS): Cast on 1 st in knit using the knitted cast on method, knit to EOR.

Row 31-32: Work two rows in stockinette.

Row 33 (WS): Cast on 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 34 (RS): Cast on 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 35-36: Work two rows in stockinette.

Row 37 (WS): Cast on 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 38 (RS): Cast on 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 39-41: Work three rows in stockinette.

Row 42 (RS): Cast on 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 43 (WS): Cast on 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 44-45: Work two rows in stockinette.

Row 46 (RS): Cast on 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 47 (WS): Cast on 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 48 (RS): Cast on 2 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 49 (WS): Cast on 2 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 50 (RS): Cast on 1 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 51 (WS): Cast on 1 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 52 (RS): Cast on 2 st in knit, knit to EOR.

Row 53 (WS): Cast on 2 st in purl, purl to EOR.

Row 54 (RS): Knit to EOR, cast on two stitches in extension, knit across the final (55th) row.

Note: when on the increasing portion, you can swap the cast ons at the beginning of each row to casting on at the beginning and end of each knit round, e.g. cast on 1 st using knit cast on method, knit to end, cast on 1 st in extension.

You have now joined back in the round. Replace your BOR round where it was on the cuff of the sock, if you had one.

Work the rest of the sock to your desired foot length, minus the length allocated for the toe (~4cm).

Toe decreases:

  • Knit 1, ssk, knit to end of first needle, k2tog, knit 1, switch to second needle, knit1, ssk, knit to end of second needle, k2tog, knit 1
  • Knit all stitches
  • Repeat rows 1 & 2 until you have 20 stitches total, or 10 stitches on each needle. Graft the stitches together using kitchener stitch.

Finishing the cut-out:

Pick up along the edge of the cut-out, with an approximate ratio of 3 in every 4 stitches. Bind off using an i-cord bind off.
