Army training camp Darmstadt
29 July 1898.
My dear László
I have been in your debt already for a long time by not answering your kind letter and [illegible] but all sorts of circumstances to do with our future apartment in Mainz kept me from doing so. Please forgive me if I only thank you today for your lovely letter and, in my wife’s[1] name, for the sweets that you sent her.
The picture “Katarina” [7243] has

arrived safely in Mainz about 14 days ago and is hanging back in the place that you designated. During the coming winter we will unfortunately have to leave our apartment here as the house has been sold and the new owner has given us notice. We will move in with my father-in-law as it is not worth trying to find a suitable replacement for the short time which we are expecting to stay in Mainz.
I have ordered you copies at Hanfstängls and will send them to you.
Concerning our wish of publication in Kunst für Alle: we will allow reproductions

but only if there is no mention of the name Freise either in the text or in the picture. To that extent I have written to the publishers and have been given a [illegible]. We feel uncomfortable showing this picture under our name as it is a portrait of my wife.
Captain Bothe – who has been posted now to Kassel (Emilienstrasse 21) – sends his regards and says he hopes that you will visit him when in the area or in Kassel.
My wife sends you, dear friend, warm greetings. At the moment she is in [-----]bad;
I have been here since the 25th July on army exercises which will last until the 20th August.
We would be so very pleased if you came to visit us after your return from London. I hope

you will then remain for a few days and stay with us!
For now, good-bye. Kind regards, your faithful
Freise
