My dear Philip,
Here we are in Europe and hoping in some way sometime some how our paths may cross during the Summer. Of course you are busy & if work were not your relaxation, or if you did not live for Art or if Art were not your

very life the soul would have been without a body these many years – Before leaving we received the copy of the Art Journal containing the very first appreciation of your recent portraits and a most interesting sketch of your artistic development. And then on top of it all, another trip to America![1]
Heed the warning of a friend – Take a slow steamer & rest, rest because you will

[be] swamped with commissions from your many admirers who will not take no for an answer.
It is such a great source of pleasure for us that Mrs de László will accompany you – why not Jonny?[2] – who could thus have a chance to see America before he makes the great decision [illegible words]. His last letter more than intimated that he intended to return with you. However fathers, especially [illegible] have so much influence on their children that “outsiders” do not have a fair chance.
Of course we are here on business – at Brussels, midway between Paris & The Hague where we shall have to spend some time. In December [illegible words] as in the first week of January of this we were at Lima in far off Peru, attending a Congress as an official

delegate of the United States; next Summer in Rio de Janeiro as an official delegate to the Commision [friends/priests?] who are to codify International Law for the 2/ American Republic & so it goes. “Our life is but a battle & a march” as Schiller puts it.
In the interval I contrive to do a little something for myself – “ Mon verre est petit mais je bois dans mon verre” –
which means that one of these days – the new future I hope, you will receive a letter whence with my compliments, which, however you do not need to send, – There is a twice-told tale but it seems that we of good will must be telling it to the unwilling ear of the World –
This is just a line to tell you we are here, that we hope to meet & that here & everywhere we love you & yours
yr devoted James B.
