Using the BYUI Campus Map

[The screen shows the “More” tab of the I-Belong mobile app, with multiple menu options listed.]

Mahler: Hello, my name is Dan Mahler. In this video, I'm going to show you how to use the campus map within the I-belong mobile app. I have opened the app and have selected More in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. When you have selected More, It will pull up a lot of features you have access to within the app. The Campus Map is located at the fourth item from the top. I will click on that, and it will open the BYU-Idaho Interactive Map. [A top-down view of BYUI campus is shown.] And here, you can see campus is highlighted, and the buildings are labelled. As I zoom in on a building, it will actually show me the floor layout and the room number for each floor within a building.

[The screen zooms in on the building named “Manwaring Center”. Elevator-like buttons appear on the side of the screen with floor numbers to select.]

Here, the first floor is highlighted in orange on the right-hand side of the screen. This is for the Manwaring Center. If I needed to look at the second or third floor, I could also do that.

Next, I'm going to click on the Menu button in the upper right-hand portion of the screen across from Beta BYU-Idaho Map. When I click on the Menu button, it pulls up several options. [The options shown are different sub-menu buttons.]  We're first going to look at Map Layers. Under Map Layers, we'll click on Base Map. This allows you to change the base map that you look at as you're interacting with the BYU-Idaho campus map. We're going to leave it on roads for now. But you could change it to satellite, topographic, or a BYU-Idahospecific map. Next is Buildings. When we click on Buildings, you can first see that the building label is on. And we know that it's on because the buildings are labelled. You can toggle that off if you would like to. Next, you could click on the drop-down menu and select a building that you need to find.

[A list of building names is shown under the drop-down menu under the “Buildings” sub-menu.]

Say you didn't know where the Benson was, you could click on Benson. Then you could click Zoom To, and it would zoom to that building. And if you didn't know how to get to that building, you could get directions. We'll show you how to do that later as we zoom into a specific room. Next is Campus Information.[This sub-menu shows a list of multiple on/off toggle buttons with labels.] This is a very handy feature as well. This shows different facilities and different services across campus. So if I needed to know where a baby changing or a bike rack was, I could simply toggle it on, collapse the menu, and then from there, I could see all of the bike racks across campus. [Multiple bicycle symbols are shown as pinpoint markers next to each building of BYU-Idaho.] We'll turn that back off.

And we will look at the next section, which is Emergency Layers.[Another sub-menu of labeled toggle buttons appears.] This allows you to see AED across campus if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need one.

Next is Parking. [A new sub-menu of labeled toggle buttons appears.] If we click on Parking, it will allow us to toggle on any parking zone that we would like to see. So if I needed to see the North Zone and where I could park with the North Zone permit, I would toggle that on and then it would show me in blue where I could park with a North Zone permit. Come back in and turn that off. The last thing that we'll look at is the “Search feature in the campus map.

[The “Search” sub-menu is selected and shows a pop-up with a text entry box, with a “close” button below it.]

Here in the search feature, I can search for either a building, or I could search for a specific room within a building. So we'll use this example. [Mahler types “Kimball 17” then selects “KIM170G” from the drop-down menu that appears as he types.] So if I needed to find not only the Kimball building, but Kimball 170, you can see there's our options, we're going to choose Kimball 170G.

[The “Search” menu closes and the map zooms to show a floor plan centered on the room, Kimball 170G. A menu box appears next to the room’s position on the screen with information about the room and buttons below, one of which shows a person walking.]

It will actually zoom to that building, and I can see it there. And then—if this will scroll over—I'm able to select walking directions to that building.

[A “processing route…” message appears over the screen. A pop-up on the screen then asks the user if the app can use their current location.]

And you will need to allow that BYU-Idaho app to use your location while using the app. I'm okay if it uses my location. And then it will allow me to navigate to that specific room from wherever I am on campus or even off campus. [A stop pinpoint marker appears over the top of Kimball 170G.] We hope that this has been beneficial. If you have any questions at all you can always reach out to us at ibelong@byui.edu. Thank you.
