Required tools and supplies:

  • One standard 120VAC outlet
  • One three-prong extension cord and one power strip with switch
  • One CaveSim power supply:

  • CaveSim serial hub(s):

  • CaveSim sensors:

  • CaveSim Interface Box and software (optional)

WARNING: Never plug CaveSim serial cables or sensors into a standard computer, except as specifically indicated in these instructions.  Failure to follow this warning may destroy your CaveSim and/or computer hardware.

WARNING: Never plug telephone equipment into CaveSim phone jacks.  Failure to follow this warning may destroy your CaveSim and/or telephone hardware.

WARNING: Never plug ethernet equipment into CaveSim ethernet jacks.  Failure to follow this warning may destroy your CaveSim and/or ethernet hardware.

WARNING: Never open CaveSim sensors or other electronic parts.  Failure to follow this warning may destroy your CaveSim hardware.

Step 1: Plug your extension cord into a 120VAC outlet.  There are no special power requirements.  Any standard, working 120VAC outlet will do.  Your extension cord should be long enough to reach the cave structure, preferably a part of the structure that you can easily access from outside the cave.

Step 2: Plug the power strip into the extension cord.  The purpose of the power strip is to allow you to turn the system off.  If you don’t have a power strip, this step is optional.

Step 3: As shown below, the CaveSim power supply has two boxes.  The larger box has a 120V plug on one end.  Plug this into your power strip.

As you do the remaining steps, refer to this picture:

Step 4: Plug the low-voltage DC plug into the jack on the smaller box.  The green LED on the smaller box should light up.  If it does not, check your outlet, cord and power strip.

Step 5: Plug the serial cable on the smaller box into your serial hub.  The blue LED on the serial hub should light up.

Step 6: For each sensor that you have, plug one serial cable into the serial hub.  Use only serial cables provided by CaveSim (using other cables may damage your sensors and/or power supply -- trust us, we’ve done it!)

Step 7: Plug the other end of each serial cable into one of your sensors.  The indicator LED on each sensor should turn on and be red.

Step 8: If you have a CaveSim Interface Box, plug it in just like you would plug in a sensor (use a serial cable to connect the Interface Box to one of your serial hubs).  Also connect the Interface Box to your PC using a second serial cable.
