‘Better than John’, Evening Journal, 24 July 1924

There is something very human in the piquant contrast between Lord Leverhulmes attitude to different painters who have been privileged to execute his portrait. His latest sittings have been at the disposal of Mr. de Laszlo, the society painter, who portrays his subjects in such elegant and pleasing style that they never feel themselves victims. Lord Leverhulme is so delighted with the result that he is not even satisfied with the original canvas [6043], but has ordered three replicas [6047][6048][6050]. On the excellent principle, doubtless, that you never can have too much of a good thing. This is totally different from the famous episode with Augustus John, when there was only one portrait, and that decapitated. Obviously, my lord Leverhulme likes his art portraiture without any demnition psychology in it.
