My dear Friend,

I was touched by your solicitous letter: thank you very much for asking. My poor dear wife^[1] is now much better and the sore has completely healed but her ear is still being treated and, at least for now, she has lost all hearing in it. I am not ruling out the possibility of taking her to Vienna or Berlin for a couple of days during the Christmas period

to see a consultant.

She is only now starting to sing again and perhaps that will help to get her ragged nerves back to normal. The fact that she has been unable to function to the best of her artistic abilities has caused her a lot of psychological distress.

You both now have momentous days ahead of you. I hope from the bottom

of my heart that everything goes smoothly and that soon you will be rocking a sweet, stout, healthy little girl in your arms^[2] – and first and foremost that your incomparable, noble-spirited and honourable wife may find her health and vigour unimpaired.

I have made frequent inquiries regarding your niece Ilonka^[3] and in fact I even saw her not long ago.

She is conscientious and is doing well but I impressed upon her the need to take more exercise and to eat better, because she has a slight tendency to anaemia.

Édes Barátom!

Nagyon jól esett szíves érdeklődésed és hálásan köszönöm azt. Szegény jó feleségem már elég jó színben van, a seb már egészen begyógyúlt, de a fül még mindig kezelés alatt van és a hallás e fülön sajnos még eddig legalább szünetel. Nincs kizárva, hogy a karácsonyi szünet alatt pár napra Bécs- vagy Berlinbe megyek

vele consultálni.

Most kezd csak hozzá megint az énekléshez és ez talán hozzá fog járulni ahhoz, hogy zaklatott idegei némileg a régi kerékvágásba kerüljenek, mert lelki szendvedéseit fokozta lényegesen az is, hogy művészi tökéletesedésében annyira gátolva volt.

Most ti is nagy és komoly napoknak néztek elébe, baráti

érző szívem legmélyéből kivánom, hogy minden legjobban menjen is egy édes, vastag, egészséges leánykát ringathass nemsokára karjaidon, és hogy elsősorban páratlanúl jó és nemes lelkű nőd Ő Nagysága változatlanul friss és jó egészségben maradjon.

Kis Ilonka húgod után sűrűn tudakozódtam sőt nem régiben énmagam is meg-

hallgattam. Igen szorgalmas és szépen halad, de lelkére kötöttem hogy többet sétáljon és jobban táplálkozzék, mert kissé vérszegénységre hajlandó.
