Lesson 7 Activity 7.1 Romantic Authors Write About What They Know

Lesson 7 Activity 7.2 What Will I Write About?

[1]

Wordle of terms used by teachers and students in creative writing.

To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.

- Herman Melville[2]

Summary: The Romantic authors, like any good authors, wrote about their lives and their life experiences. Some wrote poetry inspired by nature and their imaginations. Others wrote nonfiction witnessing the injustices that moved them to action. The American Voice continued to grow and represent its people, too narrowly for some and too broadly for others. Those conflicting voices have not been stilled and continue to inspire contemporary writing. What inspires and compels you to write?

Learning Target:

I can write as a writer using real or imagined experiences or events.

STEP 3:

Complete a Creative Writing Piece via Google Docs for ONE of the works only (again, your choice):

  1. STYLE - You are free to choose any text type as the format for your creative piece (poetry, prose fiction, prose non-fiction, drama).
  2. TOPIC - Choose any topic/focus (a character, a scene, a controversial issue, a symbol, etc…).
  3. FORMAT – Use this guide for any grammar issues[3] that arise. Use appropriate voice and description.
  1. Be sure to include a two to three sentence explanation for your your chosen style, your chosen topic, and why you chose both.
  2. The written creative piece must be 500 - 800 words in length.

Examples of Style & Topic ideas:

The following are examples of creative writing options-

STEP 4:

Share your Google Doc with a team of 2 other students by deadline. You should give good constructive feedback on your team’s drafts as well via Google Doc comments. Your teacher should review this draft with feedback. (Share doc with teacher after student feedback) Revise and make any necessary changes.
