Understand that magnets attract some metal objects. 

 What other things you think will attach to the magnets?

  1. The teacher will display different sizes and shapes of refrigerator magnets.
  2. Have the children answer: What are these objects called? How do people use magnets like this? Display Flip Chart p. 53 to review vocabulary terms.
  3. Guide oral vocabulary development by first pointing at each object pictured on the chart and identifying it with the children.
  4. Ask: What is attached to the magnets? What else do you think will attach to magnets?
  5. Help the children tell about objects that magnets will pull and will not pull.
  6. Introduce the word attract.
  7. Have the children pantomime what it means to pull something.
  8. Have children use picture clues and answer questions.
  9. Call volunteers to circle and put an X on the appropriate pictures.
  10. Have the children answer the following questions: What would you use to help you quickly pick up a box of spilled paper clips?  Why?
  11. Have the children explain their answer for the compare question.
