Notes: Skills Students Need

New Media Literacy-Being able to replace old skills (such as reading a map) with new skills navigating using tech

Tech is giving us access to information

Teachers growing in tech as well

Students need to be able to critically assess especially when it comes to media and the bias/messages that are being projected

EARCOS w/Jeff: What’s the one thing you would replace with a total new media literacy?

Embed them within the context of the unit.

IB units are so structured. Evaluating sources for validity.

Everything is bias. All things come with a viewpoint. And it goes across time periods.

Speech: How-To (Literacy), Replace with How-To YouTube Tutorial (New Media Literacy)

Do we have a role in teaching that or guiding them along with tech?

Students feel pushed sometimes with how we are utilizing technology in they are expected to just know.

Give students time to “play” and research those tech skills.

Showing them how to search for valid tutorials and resources.

Teachers are encouraged to try out the technology before asking students to do it.

Skills should be across disciplines. What skills they are learning in other classes that are applicable?

Possibly using Advisory time to create, produce, without the pressures of a grade.

Also, possibly letting them try it first without the pressure and then able to reproduce it.

Process oriented thinking. It’s how students get there.
