Unit 5: Final Assessment

State and Local Government

For the unit 5 summative assessment you will be creating a presentation explaining how you would run for state or local office and why. This presentation should include what office you are running for, why you are running, what party you would run for (if applicable) and the position on taxes and spending you would take.

Benchmark 9.1.4.6.7:

Explain the powers and operations of the state of Minnesota government as defined in its constitution and its relationship with the federal government

Benchmark 9.1.4.6.9:

Compare and contrast the budgets of the United States and Minnesota governments describing the major sources of revenue and categories of spending for each.

Benchmark 9.1.4.6.8:

Explain the powers and operations of local government in Minnesota.

To complete Unit 5 Final Assessment please follow the steps below:

You will create a presentation explaining the following elements to running for office:

  1. What office you are running for (what does that office do?)
  1. Things to consider-Executive, judicial or legislative branch? State or local government?
  1. Why you are running for office (what changes do you want to make?)
  2. How will you run for office (you got to get those votes!)
  1. Things to consider-Advertising, grassroots campaign, donations, sponsorship (who is supporting you?)
  1. What party you are running for and why or if you want to run independent explain that too.
  1. Things to consider-Republican party, democratic party, other parties, independent?
  1. The position on taxes and spending you would take and why.
  1. Things to consider-The famous quote by George H.W. Bush “Read my lips...no new taxes” is considered one of the reasons he was not elected to a second presidential term. Be careful!

STEP 1:

You should use PowerPoint, Google Presentation, or a similar program to create your presentation. The finished presentation should be a minimum of 8 slides, but cannot exceed 12 slides. Examine the grading rubric for details. A breakdown of requirements is as follows:

Using each of the 5 elements of the grading rubric, you will now grade your own presentation and provide a written explanation of why you graded yourself in the way you did. This should be completed as a separate document.

STEP 3

SUBMIT THIS PRESENTATION AND YOUR WRITTEN EXPLANATION OF YOUR PERSONAL GRADE THROUGH THE ASSIGNMENT MODULE BELOW.

Upload your presentation to the add submission box do the same with your completed self evaluation

o Open document to your computer

o Complete the Presentation

o Click "Save As" and save it onto a special place on your computer

o Click "Upload a File"

o Upload the file to this Moodle page

o Click Save. You will repeat these same directions for the written explanation for your personal

 grade.
