Dr. J. J. Buchanan (1855-1937) was probably Pittsburgh’s outstanding surgeon of the first third of this century. He served on the staff of Mercy Hospital from 1890 until his death during which time this hospital was foremost in the city. He did all types of surgery well and introduced antiseptic surgery into the area. He served as professor of surgery at Pittsburgh Medical School for 28 years. He was awarded every honor that the surgical world had to offer.
He excelled as an author, writing 60 articles on diverse surgical subjects, a book on a European odyssey and an autobiographical story with his memoirs.
Dr. Buchanan was the son of a railroad and Civil War surgeon and the father of two sons; a prominent Pittsburgh lawyer and a surgeon who also became a professor of surgery. During his long career he probably trained more surgeons than anyone in the city’s history.
He was also one of Pittsburgh’s most loyal citizens, writing about its problems and suggesting solutions. A brilliant student and scholar, Dr. Buchanan was one of our city’s greatest leaders and benefactors.
