[1] Adrian Scott Stokes (with contributions by Marianne Stokes), Hungary. Painted by Adrian & Marianne Stokes. Described by Adrian Stokes, Adam & Charles Black, London, 1909. In the book, Stokes notes that “László, whose ability has already earned a European reputation, is the leading portrait painter.”
[2] Likely Ferenc Kossuth (1841-1914), civil engineer, politician and son of Hungarian revolutionary, Lajos Kossuth (1802-94). At the time of this letter, Kossuth was Minister of Commerce. Kossuth had provided the Stokes with useful information about various places in Hungary, particularly Lake Balaton, q.v. Stokes, p. 268. Stokes describes Kossuth in the book as “an artist of considerable accomplishment, both as sculptor and painter”.
