Setting up a Parent Observer account in Canvas (Grades 7-12 Only)
This account set-up is for a web browser only and not the Canvas Parent App. To set up your Canvas Parent App, visit this document: Canvas App for Parents. Each account requires a separate set-up.
If you have multiple children, you can link them also by using this process:
You will see your child(ren)s courses listed in alphabetical order. Click on the course you want to view to see more information.
To better organize your account, we suggest using the color labeling and nickname system in Canvas. From the Canvas Dashboard you can edit each course indicator by clicking on the edit icon in the top right hand corner of the course icon.
TIP: If you are observing multiple children it is helpful to use a common color to group each student’s courses. For instance, if you have two children you can color one set of courses blue and the other set red. When you click on the Canvas Calendar your children’s assignments will be identified by their color set.
How do I set my Canvas notification preferences?
In Global Navigation, click the Account link , then click the Notifications link .
Set Notification Preferences
Each notification is set to a default preference. To change a notification for a contact method, locate the notification and click the icon for your preferred delivery type.
To receive a notification right away, click the check mark icon . These notifications are delayed by one hour in case an instructor makes additional changes, which prevents you from being spammed by multiple notifications in a short amount of time.
To receive a daily notification, click the clock icon .
To receive a weekly notification, click the calendar icon . The date and time of your weekly notifications are posted at the bottom of the notifications page.
If you do not want to receive a notification, click the remove icon .
Note: Each set notification preference will automatically apply to all of your courses. They cannot be set individually.
