MDG 4 requires a reduction in death of children under five by 5% each year. The reduction in such deaths from 156 in 2011 to 137 per 1,000 live births in 2006 represents an annual reduction of only 1.2% way below the required 5%. However the fall in child mortality rate from 137 in 2006 to 90 in 2011 represents an annual reduction of 8.1%.
This kind of progress needs to be maintained as the deadline nears. The progress has been attributed to the massive immunization campaign. Malaria, anaemia, pneumonia, malnutrition and other respiratory infections are cited as the major causes of death among children under five years in the UNDP-Uganda MDG report of 2013.
