Dear Marczi,

I was happy to get your last letter – and am glad to hear that you are well – From Gyula^[1] I have had a Christmas card – but nothing more – and he writes that Szerén^[2] is poorly – and that they will write later – I am waiting for an acknowledgement of the money I sent – to them – and to Aunt Anna.^[3] You are right – that one should not bother writing to those good-for-nothing Frims – but I always thought that Aunt Anna was a decent sort – from now on I shall put her from my mind – Everything you say about the situation in Bpest is true – and believe me, I am aware of it – but I don’t want to confront it.

I have had a splendid and very flattering official commission from the Interior Ministry with regard to my portrait of the County Prefect and the Government has offered 6000 pengős^[4] – this painting

Légrády^[5] – Ferenczy^[6] I’d get less for those last two – I need to paint them together and suggested going to Pest in February and again in the summer. But now because of Romania I have a brilliant excuse – namely that I have to paint the royal portraits by a specific date^[7] – which doesn’t leave me time to stay in Pest for 3 weeks – so in 2 weeks’ time I’ll write to put it off until the summer, when I hope they will come to Paris – and I can use the Duc de Gramont’s^[8] palace to paint in because I don’t want to go to Pest just because of that – everyone would pester me mercilessly – I haven’t heard from Bárczy for a long time – he has finally got all he wanted out of me – I hope that Parliament will see to it that I receive the Chain^[9] but you and I must keep mum – it’s not worth it – now, at last, everything is sorted out with the Romanian National Bank and

the minister here – I set off from London on the 22nd of January and then travel in a private carriage from Calais – which I stay in until Bucharest, via Pest – you mustn’t breathe a word to anyone – but come on your own in secret to the station – in Bpest and we can have a few minutes to ourselves in the coupé – Officially I will only write from the Royal Palace in Bucharest to say that I have arrived…and that because of this I am unable to go to Pest to do any painting – and will put it off until the summer – When I get there, of course, the Hungarian newspapers will find out from the Romanian Press that I am there – but I won’t return via Pest – but will meet Lucy

– perhaps in Bucharest – and from there we will go to Palestine via Constantinople for two or three weeks – to rest – and I will do some sketching there – If Lucy breaks her journey in Pest, then do go and visit her, surreptitiously – but these are just plans – for God’s sake, though, not a word to anyone – My valet travels with me – and I will be the guest of Queen Marie – for at least a month – or perhaps five weeks – because they will probably ask me to paint the Crown Prince as well – I shall have a very pleasant time with the old Queen. You have seen the portrait I did of her 10 years ago [3200], haven’t you? She always comes to see us when she is in London – she is exceptionally intelligent – and kind – and interested in art – I have got three paintings to finish before I set off for Bucharest,

among them a portrait of the Prime Minister’s wife [2324], which is an important commission for me – I will continue with it on the 8th of January and on that day too, her husband the Prime Minister^[10] is coming to see me – hugely important – as far as my time in Bucharest is concerned – and with regard both to the Romanians and the Hungarians – is that it is not a British or a German or a French artist, but I who have been asked to do this – – –

Thank you for the [dates] referring to Crown Prince Rudolf – but think about it for a moment – was it the 1885 – or the Millenium [sic] exhibition that he opened? Because in what year did the Millenium [sic] exhibition take place?^[11]

Writing my memoirs is an enormous amount of work – I am amazed at how much material I have in front of me – This afternoon we light the Christmas tree and

the family will be here – and our two grandchildren as well – we’re getting old – Lucy was 64 the day before yesterday – I have known her for 42 years – On the morning of the 28th – with my secretary, we are going down to Eastbourne, to stay in a hotel by the sea until the 2nd of January – for a rest – and Lucy and I – on our own – with our secretary, will see the new year in – and in the mornings we will play golf – and I will dictate my book to my secretary in the afternoons. We need to rest a little – because I still have a lot to do before I set off on my travels – we sent out almost 200 identical Christmas cards – and season’s greetings are coming in from all over the world. So, dear old thing – don’t tell anyone about my trip to Bucharest – or the [Lauer?] business – I don’t trust anyone in Pest – – –

I had a nice letter from Elza^[12] and co. – Nothing from Ilonka^[13] yet and I’m waiting to hear from Szerén – about whether Aunt Anna got the money.

Örömmel vettem utolsó leveledet – s örvendek hogy jól vagy – Gyulától csak karácsonyi üdvözlet jött – más semmi – s írja Szerén nem jól van – s későbben írni fognak – várok tőlük elismervényt – az ő – s Anna néni összegről. Igazat [sic] van – hogy ezen haszontalan Frim családnak nem szabadna írni – de gondoltam hogy végre Anna néni mindenkor jó volt – de továbbra nem veszek tudomást róla – Mint [sic] azt mit írsz a Bpesti viszonyokról igaz – s hidd el ismerem – de nem akarom látni –

A Belügyminisztertől nagyhangu gyönyörű hivatalos megbízást kaptam a főispán arczképére vonatkozólag s a Kormány 6000 pengőt ajánlt fel – ezen képét

találkozom – s lehet Bukarestben – onnét Konstantinápolyon át Palestiniába megyünk két három hétre – pihenni – s ott vázlatokat festeni – Ha Lucy Pesten átjönne akkor Ti őt ott meglátogatjatok csendben – de ezek tervek – s az Istenre kérlek ne szólj senkinek – Insasom velem utazik – s Mária királynő vendége leszek – bizonyosan egy hónapig – vagy öt hétig leszek ott – mert valoszínűleg fel fognak kérni a Koronaherczeget megfesteni – az öreg királynővel kellemes napjaim lesznek, hiszen ismered arczképemet róla melyet 10 évvel ezelőtt festettem – s ha Londonba van mindenkor meglátogat bennünket – rendkivül intelligens – kedves – s művészet iránt érdeklődik – még három képet kell befejeznem mielőtt indulunk Bukarestbe

Köszönöm a [datusokat] Rudolf trónörökösre nézve – de még egyszer kérlek tud meg – hogy az 1885-ki – avagy a milleniumi [sic] kiállítást nyitotta e meg? és mely évben volt a milleniumi [sic] kiállítása?

Rengeteg munka eletem megirása – magam is csodálkozom minő oriási anyag áll rendelkezésemre – Ma délután a karácsonyfa megvilágításaval itt lesz

Elzáék szép levelet írtak – Ilonkától meg nem hallottam s várok levelet Szeréntól – hallani miként fogadta Anna néni a pénzt?
