Of Mice and Men & The Pearl by John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck’s books Of Mice and Men and The Pearl were both great books. They both had interesting plots that pulled you in, and made you not want to stop reading them. You just had to know what happened next. They are something that I wouldn’t mind to read again.
These two plots are alike because the both a have a struggle or a problem. They don’t have a lot of money and they struggle. They both kill someone, too.
In Of Mice and Men, two friends set out to start work on a farm. Their names were George and Lennie. Lennie wasn’t the smartest guy but he had a good heart. George watched out for Lennie and tried to keep him out of trouble. The farm owner’s son’s wife was always up to mischief with the men on the ranch. One day she tried flirting with Lennie and he accidently killed her.
A baby was bitten by a scorpion, and his parents go on a journey to find a pearl to pay the doctor to help. The trackers come after the parents and they end up killing the baby thinking it is a coyote. The parents end up throwing the pearl back and go back to town.
KIno and Lennie both kill somebody. They both didn’t mean to cause any harm, it just kinda happened.
Three main characters in Of Mice and Mice were George, Lennie, and Curley’s Wife. George was your typical man of that time. He dreamed of a life of luxury but just slaved away on a farm that he didn’t even own. He kept a careful watch over his pal, Lennie. George tried to take of Lennie and tried to keep him safe. Lennie was not able to care for himself. He had some type of mental disorder and sometimes couldn’t control his behavior. Curley’s Wife was the lady of the ranch. She never seemed to be happy with her husband. However, she was always flirting with other the other men on the ranch.
Some characters in the Pearl were Juana, Kino, and Coyotito. Juana is the mother. Kino is the father. Coyotito was their baby.
Symbols in both stories. They were all apart of major events.
Some symbols of Of Mice and Men were soft things, a mouse, and a hand. The soft things represented curiosity of Lennie. He wanted to feel soft things all the time. The mouse gave clues about how Lennie would later kill Curley’s Wife and his puppy. The hand represented Lennie’s strength, and how powerful he was.
Some symbols in the Pearl were a scorpion, the pearl, and the coyote. The scorpion represented power. The pearl represented fate. The coyote represented weakness.

The theme of Of Mice and Men gave full look out about how challenging life can be. The main theme was loneliness.
The theme of the Pearl is fate. It had to deal with destiny, luck and fortune, God’s plans, etc.
The story took place on ranch. The ranch wasn’t a happy place or a place you would dream of living at, but it was better than a lot of places in that time.
There were several settings in the Pearl. Some of them were the sea, the village by the sea, the Plaster City, and the deserts and mountains.
These books were great and I would highly recommend them to other readers. They had great plots and themes. I loved them.
