English Mural Project

My job for the mural was the documentary group. Our job was to film everything and get interviews and create the documentary for the mural. Before that, the whole class agreed on a theme together based on our views of the Kite Runner. Then we divided up into groups that we wanted to be in and the process began. The six facets of understanding are explanation, interpretation, application, perspective, empathy, and self-knowledge.

My rough draft features drops of blood with characters in them. The blood represents the bond between the characters. The blood connects them, whether it's blood relatives or unbreakable bonds. This represents substantive literary analysis because this is what I picked out of when reading the Kite Runner and this, in my opinion, was the techniques and purpose that the author used. My theme for the rough draft is the relationships between people, whether it is blood or friendship.

Our group’s job was to film the process for the documentary. I contributed by filming my own clips. It was a fun process and I enjoy getting in people’s faces and filming them. I think it is funny, the looks that people give me and the other documentary people when we are filming. The filming process was simple. Gather clips and interviews and put them on google docs, create a script for narration, narrate the script, bring the audio and clips and interview all together and create the documentary. Fun stuff like adding music were also included in the documentary. My contributions were to be efficient in creating the documentary, give more options for the editor, allow for everyone to have a voice in the documentary, and to have something to appeal to the audience for their entertainment and understanding.

For the median for my final draft, I used water colors. I used watercolors because one of my areas, I had to create water underneath a bridge and water colors were best for that. I also used water colors to create drops of blood in the water. The blood ended up turning into a purple-like color due to the mixing of blue and red water colors because for some reason, where water colors become wet, they mix together. Who knew?? For the bridge, I used water colors but I wish I had used acrylic paint but I didn’t realize what I could’ve done. I put in the blood to represent the bloodshed in all of the book. There were many instances where blood was shed that caused lots of pain. Like when Hassan was raped, the blood is like a representation of the corruption and the water represents his soul. The blood corrupted Hassan’s soul just like how blood contaminates water.

Mural Reflection

        This process in creating the mural was very enjoyable and was a fun process to do. All the mural discussions were fun because it would be serious and then at one point, there would be some comedic aspect to the discussion that made everyone laugh. Creating the mural was also very fun. It was really cool to see how everyone though in terms of the Kite Runner and how they interpreted it. Most of these interpretations came from the motif tracking that we all did. Our group contributions were very fun. The documentary crew had a fun time doing what we did. We got in the faces of the groups and filmed them and people gave us funny looks and laughed and it was a great time. Overall, I recommend this project again because we all came together to create something great and it was really fun.
