May 5, 2016

Dear Peter and members of the Yale Corporation,

In our role as faculty, we urge you to reverse your decision to retain the name of Calhoun College.

We fully understand and endorse your view that Yale University should engage the complexity of its past. Over the course of its history, Yale’s students and faculty have made countless contributions to scholarship, invention, the arts and the human condition.  This has not been without cost and that cost has sometimes included the embrace of ideas and actions that are repugnant.  Engaging this complexity is integral to our teaching mission.  The name of a college, however, does not only represent a university’s engagement with a historic legacy; it also conveys its honoring of an individual--as with the inspired choice of Pauli Murray College.

The residential college system’s contribution to our success as a University should not be underestimated. These are our students' homes: the places where they process the challenges and high expectations we hold them to, attend college seminars, discuss and debate issues with their peers, eat dinner and have fun. And, as we were reminded at the May 5th Yale College Faculty meeting, a student’s college affiliation goes with them when they leave Yale. We are doing these students a disservice by forcing them to live unnecessarily under a brand so deeply associated with slavery.

Sincerely,

(This letter closed on May 23, 2016 with 396 signatures.  This total includes 216 FAS full professors, 119 assistants and associates and 61 non-ladder or non-FAS faculty)*
