Access (Get) | It's easier for me to understand content when it’s gone over through an in-class presentation… the side notes a teacher makes help me to easily understand content. | It's difficult for me to understand content when the only time it is discussed is through reading. When reading I sometimes skip chapters that may be important or skim sections and miss something. I see reading as a good intro, but then look to an in class discussion to highlight the most important aspects of the reading and really dig into them. |
Engage (Work) | It's easiest for me to work when we have class time for homework and practice, and it is a relatively quiet(but not necessarily silent) environment. This way if I need it I can get a teacher’s assistance. | It's difficult for me to work when everything is freaking insane and loud. It gives me a headache and I can’t focus and get my work done. This also happens at home sometimes too, so it’s better and more productive for me to get my work done during class. |
Express (Show) | It's easiest for me to demonstrate what I’ve learned when we are given multiple different choices to demonstrate our learning. This way I can work hard and show the best of my knowledge. | It's difficult for me to demonstrate what I’ve learned through tests, because it doesn’t do a good job of showing all I know. For example, on a history test, I could probably explain the progression of Henry VIII’s renouncing of the Catholic Church, his children’s religious reforms, the causes of these, and why they were important at the time and today. But if I can’t name the important dates of these, I may not get any points from a test. |

Access (Get) | Taking my own notes: this helps me organize my brain, ensure I am actually paying attention to what I am supposed to be absorbing, and write down abbreviations, slogans, or anything that will help me specifically remember things. Listening: I’m not quite sure why, but listening to teachers or videos helps me remember things better than if I simply read them. This may be because I can skim reading and think I am paying attention, but if I’m listening it’s clearer when I tune out so I try to do it less. |
Engage (Work) | Collaboration: I like collaborating because we can all make sure we have the correct answers. In groups I shift between being the person who is in need of explanation and the person explaining things. For me, collaboration is often doing a problem on my own, checking it with a group, and then if we have different answers going through it together. Paper Worksheets: I like to write down my thoughts. This is easiest on a worksheet where I have extra room to show my work and practice my knowledge. |
Express (Show) | Reports: Reports are really nice for me to work on because I can write as much as I want and have a more flexible deadline than when I have to take a test in one class. I have a lot more room to show my knowledge. Presenting: I am not a great speaker or presenter, and actually it often terrifies me to have to present in class. However, I do recognize that it is a necessary life skill, and have been working hard to improve my speaking and presenting ability. Presentations really force me to study hard and completely understand my topic, because I need to be prepared in case someone has questions. In a presentation, I learn more because I have to be overprepared. |
