  1. Will be having campus wide conversations tomorrow regarding next years budget
  1. Began planning the budget in January, trying to be conservative. Had an imbalance of $1 million.  
  2. Have already cut salaries, expenses, and retirements in previous years- not sustainable, need to make long term, sustainable changes
  3. College reality
  1. It’s hard to attract students- lower enrollments
  2. Students still need the same amount of financial aid from the college
  3. Only spending 5% of the endowment
  1. Therefore, Cornell will be restructuring many offices on campus
  2. There will be 2 open forums tomorrow with faculty and staff. Closed to students, so that staff can be open about their opinions
  3. President Oeltjenbruns- Is the lose of the athletic department’s strength and conditioning coach part of these reconstructions?
  1. President Brand- Yes.
  1. Senator Tentinger- will the specific personnel cuts be publicly announced?
  1. President Brand- To respect people’s rights we cannot disclose that information. However the non-salary expenditure cuts will be made known to students over time, such as shortening NSO by one day.
  1. John Harp- Students will also probably see a change in the services provided by Cornell over spring break, such as the meal service which will change to a cash system during the week of spring break. .
  2. President Brand- Every athletic team will be doing one fewer off campus competition, which will save $20,000-$30,000.
  3. The changes that have been made to the college’s dining services in the last couple of years have raised a considerable cost, however they are deemed worth it.

  4. Be working on your budgets within your committee meetings so that the overall Senate budget can be compiled.

  1. Already have a speaker arranged, The Young Democrats of Iowa have offered to fund Cornell students attending.

  1. PAAC prior presentation regarding an advance on their budget to spend up to $30,000 to book acts for next year at an upcoming conference, April 4-9th
  1. President Oeltjenbruns - how much did you spend last year?
  1. PAAC- $19,000 but we want the option to spend more because acts are becoming more expensive.
  1. Senator Christianson- how many students go to help select acts?
  1. PAAC- 5
  1. President Oeltjenbruns- do you look to rebook the same acts?
  1. PAAC_ generally no, students tend to not attend as much the second year. Except for the hypnotist, he is always very popular.
  1. Move to appropriate $30,000 of next years budget to PAAC

  1. Budget fest is coming up, initial budget drafts are due this Friday. Appropriations committee will be going over them
  1. Budget fest officially starts the first Tuesday of next block, April 15th
  2. Working with Senator Christianson to make sure that all groups that want to be are reactivated

  1. Maybe a dodgeball tournament for all of Cornell and Mount Vernon
  1. Senior Class
  1. Meeting with Elise was canceled, need to reschedule that meeting to continue discussing the senior reception.

  1. Constituent contact event is planned and will involve questions regarding what the class wants next year from senate, will also be giving out gift cards.
  1. Sophomore Class
  1. Will start planning their constituent contact event

  1. need to finalize the plans for 2 potential constituent contact events

  1. OohLala App
  1. Need a little under $3,000 out of next years budget for this. Documents about OohLala were sent out to senate members. Will vote on this appropriation next week
  2. 3 year contract for the app
  3. Senator Tentinger- Will this app be available to all students and would it be available on a computer for students without smart phones?
  1. VP Lane- Yes it would be available to all students, we’re not sure about the computers but probably
  1. Senator Rocker- this App sounds very helpful and useful but are their other options?
  1. President- We haven’t looked into other options, we received a cold call about this app
  1. President- Have talked with Tara about the logistical questions. Related to community, contact person between OohLala and the Cornell community, technical questions.
  2. Senator Tentinger- Would feel more comfortable if we had other apps to compare this too.
  3. Senator Christianson- We need to go out in the next week and ask Cornell if this is something that they should have/need..
  4. President- This will not be replacing Community, Moodle, or Self Service
  1. John Harp- Dining services advisory committee, anyone who wants to join should talk to John!
  1. Meet once or twice a block in the mornings, talk with dining staff about any and all things related to dining, food, students and staffs behavior, cleanliness, etc.
  2. Next meeting is a week from today at 8am in the Thayer dining room
  3. Interested: Senator Berube, Senator Rocker, Senator Banks, Senator Brunson, Senator Weightman,
  4. Also, a short dining survey is done once a semester, the spring version will be Monday March 30th and Tuesday March 31st. In the Thomas Commons Lobby, with a member of dining services and a member of Senate
  1. President Oeltjenbruns- Have been looking into the survey on streaking, however the college has recently been putting out a lot of surveys. Therefore, we are looking into the ideal time to release this survey to students.
  1. New Business
  1. President Oeltjenbruns- Survey approved 5th block, student engagement survey but together by the politics department in conjunction with senate. Will put out this survey after elections
  1. Students will all be contacted in different ways, and the different ways will be analyzed for effectiveness
  2. Class presidents will be responsible for getting this survey to students.
  3. President Oeltjenbruns will show everyone the survey questions
  1. Office hours are starting up President Oeltjenbruns shared the google doc.
  1. Announcements
  1. Hertz on demand- was a service at no cost to the college, this was very convenient for students but it was not heavily used. This service is being discontinued immediately by Hertz.
  1. Hertz does intend to notify students who are registered with the program.
  2. Hertz plans to launch a new service, Senate may be interested in this new program in the future. John will look into this
  3. Student life committee could look into alternatives to Hertz
  1. Senator McKenzie- mock trial is going to nationals!
  2. VP Lane- For office hours, it’s ideal to sign up for a time other than your committee meeting time, so that you’re available to talk to people who come in.
