What is VoiceThread?

 

"A VoiceThread is an online media album that can hold essentially any type of media (images, documents and videos) and allows people to make comments in 5 different ways - using voice (with a microphone or telephone), text, audio file, or video (with a webcam) - and share them with anyone they wish." taken from http://voicethread.com/about/

 

Signing up for a VoiceThread Account

 The free version of VoiceThread allows each user to create three VoiceThreads.  They can comment on unlimited VoiceThreads.

  1. Using a web browser go to http://voicethread.com
  2. In the upper, right corner choose Sign in or Register.
  3. The next screen is the sign-in screen.  If you don't have a VoiceThread account then click Register.
  4. Complete the form then click Register.  You should now have a VoiceThread account.

Setting up your Identity

 

  1. Using a web browser go to http://voicethread.com and login.
  2. Click the Create tab.
  3. In the upper, right corner choose the dropdown arrow next to your email address.
  4. Choose My Identities.
  5. In your identity click Edit.
  6. Here you can change the way your name is displayed on your comments and add an image that represents you or the student by clicking on Select an Image. You can also create multiple identities so multiple people can comment using one account login.
  7. When done, click Save then Done.

Step 1: Uploading images and video to create a VoiceThread

Uploading images and videos

  1. Click on the Create tab
  2. Click 1. Upload. You now have to choose the images' locations.
  • From My Computer - allows you to upload images from the computer you are on.  Choose images or videos and click Select.
  • VoiceThread will accept image types: JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG, doc types: PPT, PPS, PDF, DOC, XLS and varying video formats. Since VoiceThreads can zoom in and out on images and documents for detail, they recommend your images be at least 1280x960. This is just a guideline and not a requirement.
  • You can upload a PowerPoint presentation.  If you do then each slide will become an image in the VoiceThread.
  • Media Sources - allows you to use images already on the web.
  • My VoiceThreads - allows you to reuse images that are part of one of your other VoiceThreads previously created.
  • Flickr - allows you to use images you have already posted to Flickr. Note: it only allows you to view photos that are part of a set in Flickr.
  • Facebook - allows you to use images that you have posted to your Facebook account.
  • New York Public Library - allows you to use images already uploaded and used in a VoiceThread created by the NY Public Library.
  • URL - allows you to pull an image from the internet via its web address.
  • My Webcam - allows you to capture an image or video from the Webcam on or attached to your computer.
  1. After you have added all of your files, you can click and drag each image/video to rearrange the order.
  2. You can rotate the images by selecting the image then clicking on the left or right arrows in the upper corners of the preview image.

 

Adding Titles and Web Links on Images and Videos

 

VoiceThread allows you to put a small amount of text on an image.  It also allows you to put a clickable web address/link on an image.  (This is optional).

  1. Single-click on the first of your images
  2. At the left of your window image/video appears in the small preview window.
  • This preview window allows you to Replace an image, Rotate the image using the arrows in the upper corners, Delete it (trash can) or add a title and link.
  1. Click on (add a title and link).
  2. Fill in a title next to the title: text
  3. Type in a url next to links to:  Note: you must include the http:// before your web address or it will not work.
  4. Click Save.

 

Adding a Title and Description for your VoiceThread

Before moving on to the next step you need to give your VoiceThread a title (required) and description (optional).

 

  1. In the upper, left corner of the window click on (Add a title and description).
  2. Type in a title for your VoiceThread.  This will appear when others look at it. You can also write a description and type in tags for the thread.
  3. Click Save when finished.

 

Setting your Playback Options

 

VoiceThread puts an automatic 4 second period delay before it advances the slides.  This means an additional 4 seconds pass after the last comment on the slide has finished.  This can be changed by clicking on Playback Options at the bottom of the window and changing the Wait time then clicking Save.

 

Step 2: Adding Comments and Annotation

 

The power of VoiceThread lies in the ability to add comments.  Comments can be in the form of typed text, voice audio or video.  You can even write or doodle on the images and video while commenting.

 

  1. From the Create tab click on 2. Comment.
  2. At the bottom of the image click on Comment.

 

 

Voice-only recording of a Comment

  1. Click on the record button.  
  2. If the Adobe Flash Player Settings window pops up then click Allow to allow VoiceThread to use your microphone and/or webcam.
  3. When the red text reads Okay start talking then speak your comment into the microphone.
  4. When finished with that recording click Okay start talking or Stop recording to stop recording.
  5. Click Save to save what you have recorded. Click Cancel to delete what you recorded.
  6. You can record more by clicking the record button again. Your new audio will appear after your original recording.

Typing a Comment

  1. Click on the Type button
  2. A text box will appear above your identity icon. Begin typing in the text box.
  3. Click Save to save what you have typed. Click the X on the text box to delete what you typed.
  4. You can type another box by clicking the Type button again. Your new text box will appear after your original.

 

Making a Video Comment

  1. Click on the Video Camera button.  Note: if your video camera doesn't work see the "Setting up your Camera" section below.
  2. When the red text reads Okay start talking then speak your comment into the microphone.
  3. When finished with that recording click Stop recording to stop recording.
  4. Click Save to save what you have recorded. Click Cancel to delete what you recorded.
  5. You can record more by clicking the video camera button again. Your new audio will appear after your original recording.

 

Using your Phone to Record a Comment

This can be used it you have a computer but no microphone. It uses your telephone or cell phone as mic.

  1. Click on the Telephone button
  2. When prompted, enter your telephone number with the area code and click Call Me.
  3. VoiceThread will call your phone. After answering you'll hear a beep. You can then begin speaking. Note: You can only record 3 minutes worth of phone comments on the free account.

 

You can repeat this process for each of the slides. To advance to the next slide click on the large arrow in the lower right corner. The large arrow in the lower left corner takes you to the previous slide.

Deleting a Comment

  1. Choose the slide with the comment you wish to delete.
  2. If you have more than one comment on the slide then use the slider bar to move over the comment you wish to delete.
  3. Over your identity icon a box will appear that contains with the comment text or an icon that is associated with the type of comment. Within that box is a trash can icon. Click on the trash can icon to delete the comment.
  4. A warning message appears. Click delete it to delete the comment. Click keep it if you want to keep the comment. Note: there is no undo so be sure you want to delete the comment because you can't get it back.
  5. The comment is now deleted.

Step 3: Sharing VoiceThreads

 

By default, all VoiceThreads are private and available only to the creator. To allow them to be viewed by others you need to Share them. They can be shared for viewing only, for comments, or for editing.

Allowing Others to Add Comments

  1. There are several ways to get to the Share area of VoiceThread:
  1. From MyVoice click on the Menu icon on the VoiceTread you wish to share and click on Share.
  2. From MyVoice click on the VoiceThread you wish to share and advance to the last slide.
  3. When creating a new VoiceThread go to 3. Share.
  1. Regardless of how you get there, once in the Share area you have the option to share with the general public or with selected individuals:
  • General public - At the top click on the Get a Link button
  • From the next window check the box after allow anyone to View.
  • If you want to allow anyone to comment click the box after Comment.
  • If you allow comments then you need to choose whether or not you wish to moderate (approve) the comments.  If you do, then check the box next to Moderate Comments?  If you don't check the box then anyone's comments will appear as soon as they make them.
  • If you want it to be browseable on the main VoiceThread page then check the box behind Show on Browse page?
  • Specific Individuals - This options allows only those who you wish to view and or comment on your VoiceThread.
  • Under My Contacts click the Add+ button
  • Type in the email address and name of the person with whom you would like to share then click Add.
  • From your My Contacts list click on the icon next to the rights you want that person to have.
  • Repeat this for all the friends you want to have rights.
  • If you want the person to receive an email letting them know you have shared with them and sending them a link to your VoiceThread, click on Send Invite.
  • Your friend will receive an email inviting them to your VoiceThread.

 

Allowing Others to View the VoiceThread

 

  1. Begin by viewing the thread (click on it from the MyVoice tab).
  2. Advance to the last slide. From here you will see a URL.


  3.  Highlight and copy this url to send it in email or post it to a webpage. This can be used anywhere (wiki, blog, etc.) as a link.  You can send this to anyone.
  4. If you want to embed the thread in a webpage then click on the Embed button, highlight and copy the html code and paste it into your web editor. This will play the thread within the webpage.

Setting up your Camera and Microphone

If you attempt to do a video and your video camera won't work you may have to change your settings.

  • Begin by opening your VoiceThread as if you were going to comment.
  • Right click (Control-click for Mac) on the VoiceThread and choose Settings.  This will open the Adobe Flash Player Settings.

  • Choose the video camera icon, then from the dropdown menu choose the appropriate video cam settings.  For most Mac laptops its the USB Video Class Video.
  • Click Close.
  • You should now be able to record video.
