INTRODUCTION

What is "Wallsocket"?

On her birthday, electronic producer and singer-songwriter underscores released a trailer titled "underscores 'Wallsocket' era" across youtube, twitter, and instagram on april 21st, 2023 announcing her newest project. Gaining momentum, her trailer received thousands of views and likes on each platform in a matter of hours. the trailer, in 1:1 aspect ratio, features a variety of cinematic clips spliced together and paired with suspenseful music. narrated by underscores, she asks questions addressed to an unknown entity in an accusatory manner, including: "what are you thinking? "what do you have?" "where does your money come from?" "who are you forgetting?" and finally, "do you wrap back around?" the pacing gradually picks up faster and faster, flashing between clips until it fades to black.

"Wallsocket" isn't real

Not long after the trailer dropped, an image was posted on underscores's twitter and instagram clarifying a bit about the project. "I got to take the past year off," it read, "I stayed in this town called Wallsocket for a while by myself. It's this super small town in Michigan. And the longer I stayed there, the more inspired I got." a space separates the two chunks of text, which continues on, "I started to write from the perspective of the people I saw there. Trying to imagine what they were thinking and feeling. And the circumstances that allowed them to exist. Everyone is such a character" another space breaks the text with a green colored sentence that simply stated, "Welcome to Wallsocket" and a green horseshoe with 4 holes on each side of the horseshoe. this logo would be seen again. the image features a simple line drawing of a house. it looks to be two floors tall with two chairs and a table in between them on the front porch. there are two windows at the front of the house, both of which are on the second floor. the different levels of the house are labeled: Top of Foundation -1' - 0", Ground Floor 0' - 0", Second Floor 10' - 0", and Roof 20' - 0"

at first glance, this seems to be yet another concept album centered around a location. however, when you look up "Wallsocket, MI," you will quickly find out that this town is not real. so... what does this mean?

The search for Wallsocket’s websites

so we've established that "Wallsocket" is a fictional town in Michigan, but this understanding only scratches the surface of it. when you scour the depths of the internet (google search "Wallsocket" "Michigan" in quotes), a website, https://wallsocketgov.com/ pops up. the website includes a lot more background information regarding the town and even links to several Wallsocket websites, such as Moms of Wallsocket and Waterworks Weekly, which is the blog for Waterworks K12, the fictitious town's K-12 school.

taking a look at all of these domains, their relation to each other is quite evident. all of them were bought around the same timeframe and were registered with the same company (https://www.namesilo.com/)

after that, a few more websites mentioning Wallsocket were discovered, such as https://oxbowsmarket.com/, https://wallsocketpizza.com/ (the site of wallsocket’s pizza restaurant that was mentioned in a town hall meeting), and most interestingly, https://secretariat.tech/. only one of them currently doesn't have much to offer, while the others had some intriguing tidbits.

Wallsocket’s history and its so-called circumstances

according to the town’s government website, Wallsocket is a small town known for its identity as a horse town. they specialized in horse breeding, racing, and transportation, and their location was especially attractive to those in the equine industry as it was close to Detroit’s carriage makers. unfortunately, later on they suffered massively from industrialization and the “demand for pastoral goods waned.”

after this industrialization period came Secretariat, a tech company that “emerged” from Wallsocket. supposedly, they’re a massive company whose headquarters were very close to Wallsocket, consequently attracting employees who wanted to experience the small town life and history. this caused businesses to pop up at the edge of town in order to meet the new residents’ needs and houses to be built and costs of goods to raise. in short, Wallsocket became a victim of gentrification, and that was its circumstance.

        on 7/12/23, the release date and details of the Wallsocket album were officially announced, along with a statement provided as additional product info to record stores,
        “Wallsocket is a loose concept album about the American town of Wallsocket and the people that live in it. I first started making music purely on the computer, so my challenge for this album was writing the songs acoustically first and adding production afterwards. A lot of the themes of the project can be summed up by taking something natural and trying to sterilize it.

At the time of writing, I was obsessed with using the 'horseshoe theory' in an apolitical context. Where in our lives are we so one thing that we wrap back around and become its opposite? That theory is riddled throughout the album.” - underscores

Wallsocket, underscores’s 12 track sophomore LP, will be released on September 22nd 2023 through Mom+Pop Music.

POPULAR THEORIES

Secretariat login

one of the first things any visitor of the secretariat site would notice is the "Log In" field at the top right corner of the website. the thing is, nobody actually knows if this is worth cracking or what the possible log in information could be. some speculate logging in would only allow you to edit the website. others have theorized it may be the mayor's name as the username and the goal would be to figure that out. however, a little bit of detective work suggests logging in could (maybe) provide user access to an employee exclusive page. by taking a look at the website's sitemap, it's possible to find this page https://secretariat.tech/employee-access/.

so far, nobody has cracked the login information (at least that I know of). if you’re interested in attempting to do so, you may check if a username is valid or not by clicking on the forgot password option and entering usernames.

on 7/7/23, in underscord’s community q&a with april, user Queen Ellouise asked, “is the secretariat log-in a red herring or is it something we can log into at some point?” to which april responded,

        on august 5th, at around 10:45pm ET, 6 members who called in on the opening day of Wallsocket Pizza (plus the winner of the Wallsocket Pizza logo contest) received pizza boxes with Wallsocket Pizza merchandise including a t-shirt, stickers, and fishmonger vinyl. on the Wallsocket Pizza box was a qr code and a dotted code that read ‘AABRNDPRA1314’

the qr code led to the website wallsocketpizaz.com, which appears to be a typo of “wallsocket pizza” and parked namesilo website until further examination. the website automatically plays a song titled ‘ILoveMyDog77.mp3,’ a track about the mysterious mayor of Wallsocket who ran for election in 2016 (and presumably won), Jerry Bowman.

at 11:34pm ET, underscord user lenora posted the messages,

“THJATS THE LOGIN” and provided a screenshot of the Secretariat Private: Employee Access page. “THE NEW EMPLOYEE PORTAL IS COMING SOON” it stated. “Don’t forget to contact IT to set your PIN before the portal launches at the end of the month”

this affirms the theory of the Secretariat login belonging to the mayor of Wallsocket & Jerry Bowman’s role as an employee

Wallsocket's color theory

on april 22nd, 2023, just a day after the Wallsocket trailer dropped, underscores posted a q&a on her instagram story answering questions submitted by the community. "On a walk," she stated. one of the instagram stories in particular drew attention from members in underscord.

one fan asked, "is the new album theme green?" to which underscores responded, "sorta :) I've got a crazy image about the Color Theory for this era but I can't show you yet"

this led members to speculate on what the colors could mean, based on the ones that were currently being used. while green could also symbolize life and prosperity, I believe that in the context of the town's circumstance, it symbolizes greed and money. in the image that was discussed earlier containing a message from underscores and an image of a house, the line "Welcome to Wallsocket" is written in green, as well as the horseshoe logo next to it. we can see it is identical to the one on the Secretariat website, leading us to believe it is the Secretariat logo. strangely enough, Secretariat's website is in blue, so why did she change the color? I believe april did this intentionally to reveal the company's "true colors". blue could've been chosen as Secretariat's company color because it represents calm, and as a company, Secretariat wants to project a more friendly image of themselves to the general public.

        this doesn’t really stop at Secretariat, however. color theory could apply to more aspects of this universe if one takes the time to properly examine it. I just think this is the most important example.

Underscores’s character

okay, so at this point you may or may not be thinking, "what about underscores? what role does she play in this universe?"

it can be inferred, from several different sources, that underscores is the mysterious loitering musician referred to in the town hall meeting. for one, wallsocket is a pretty small town, and when none of the locals know someone, that must mean they're from out of town. furthermore, in the promotional image underscores posted after the trailer, she claims to have visited wallsocket for a small amount of time. the instagram story q&a confirmed this even more when a fan asked the question, "did you make any friends in wallsocket?" to which april responded "I wish I was that outgoing to strangers. Got some weird looks but also got some smiles :)" basically, as a character in this universe, april was in the position to observe the town but from a distance without directly engaging with them.

this doesn't mean underscores's character would provide much useful information though. as a spectator, she can only provide her point of view. her character may not know anything integral to the plot at hand.

5/2/23 update:

we now have more evidence that suggests underscores is indeed the ‘mysterious musician.’ the other candidate for this description was the character S*nny (see S*nny casting call), however, a recent @townofwallsocket tiktok captioned “Interviewing Domingo’s daughter, S*nny!” confirmed S*nny’s relation to the town as a familiar face. since S*nny was known in the town already, there’s no way she could’ve been the mysterious loitering musician.

5/8/23 update:
        a new theory is surfacing that the “mysterious musician” is the guy playing guitar in the Cops and robbers trailers and music video instead of underscores. we still have no physical description of the mysterious musician but on the Moms of Wallsocket post regarding underscores, there was no mention of her looking like the mysterious musician. this could perhaps mean she isn’t actually them. in the ‘Cops and robbers’ music video, underscores seems to be working at the supermarket since she’s behind the counter and occupies the security camera area. this may mean she has a different role but nothing has been confirmed yet.

COVID-19 in Wallsocket

looking back at the history page of wallsocket’s government website, there is a brief mention of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it affected the town. apparently it contributed greatly to the gentrification of wallsocket. “The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this influx of new residents, as wealthy professionals fled Michigan’s cities and suburbs in search of more space and a small-town vibe,” the page explained. we can also see a bit of the pandemic’s impact on the oxbow’s market website. “QUALITY. FRESH. EDIBLE.” it exclaimed in big bold letters, hilariously enough. the “About Us” section is incredibly reassuring, promising to “[provide] high standards of hygiene and cleanliness to ensure that the products are safe for consumption.” clearly, whatever happened in wallsocket during the pandemic wasn’t good.

5/2/23 update:

        on 5/1/23, a third video, titled “‘Cops and robbers’ teaser C”, was posted to each of underscores’s social media profiles, containing drone shots of the town and terrified looking mothers shopping in a grocery store. after watching the teaser, underscord member Terratype asked, “wait could the drone shots be implying an airborne illness?” keeping allusions to the COVID-19 pandemic in wallsocket in mind, this is definitely more evidence that suggests the food was contaminated.

Saline Waterworks Road

Nessie brought up the connection of the Saline Waterworks Road :

“Saline Waterworks Road is a real road near the location in the coordinates, so this is most likely the namesake for Waterworks K12.”

Along with this, there is also some other locational things that are in the vicinity of this road.

“The Oxbow location is just east of bethel church on bethel church road and there are horses as well since three fillies farm is an equestrian facility.”

Columbia Bank robbery

On April 26th, 2023, one of the original Moms of Wallsocket, Prudence Y., posted to the forum with the title “**URGENT** COLUMBIA BANK ROBBERY.” The post contained two screenshots of a news article on the website freedomcountynews.com, which is registered with NameSilo and not currently being used yet. “This is horrific!!!!! Please tell me y’all saw this!” she captioned the post.

The post alerted readers of a Wallsocket native named Joshua Domingo, who worked for Columbia Bank for over a decade. It was discovered he had been siphoning money from the accounts of elderly customers, especially from Linda Romero, whose checks were never received by her brother and her account was emptied after death.

        It’s worth noting that Domingo’s picture in the news article resembles a man who briefly appeared in the Wallsocket trailer during the line “Who are you forgetting?” This solidified him as a significant character in the Wallsocket universe.

        While the reaction from Moms of Wallsocket were overwhelmingly negative, one original mom, Tabitha T., offered a different perspective, saying, “I wouldn’t call it a robbery! Embezzlement might be the word. It’s not like he pulled a Bonnie and Clyde. And I think, while this is horrible for the parties involved, we should be careful not to fully demonize the guy. This stuff is super nuanced and his motive is still unclear!” This reply called into question the true motives of Domingo’s actions.

        “Maybe he was being extorted?” underscord member Qwert suggested. “His demeanour in the trailer just doesn’t seem like that of a thief.”

        I personally think he is somehow involved with Secretariat since he appeared in the trailer, and this involvement was possibly against his will. The article mentioned how Domingo came from an immigrant family, so it’s possible that Secretariat used his family as leverage to get him to embezzle funds on their behalf. Later on in the trailer, underscores asked the question, “Where does your money come from?” This theory would explain Secretariat’s shady money.

5/8/23 update:

        after the release of the first Wallsocket single, ‘Cops and robbers,’ Domingo’s motive became a bit more clear. this single was written by underscores from Joshua’s perspective, as indicated from the first lyric, “I’ve been working as a bank teller.” within the first verse, she directly states, “It all started when I didn’t have / Enough to pay for the crystal” which refers to crystal meth, a highly regulated and addictive stimulant drug.

5/11/23 update:

        on may 10th, 2023, the town hall meeting notes for may 9th, 2023 were posted to the town of wallsocket website. in this meeting, the Mayor allowed attendees to speak on the topic of Joshua Domingo. one of the moms of wallsocket, Marcy Dillinger, said the theft was unbelievable and “could not fathom that Joshua M. Domingo was capable of such an act.” Beatrice Biechl also didn’t believe it, stating someone should verify the news before taking action. some citizens also believed that Joshua was trustworthy, while others urged strict action. overall, the emphasis on the possibility of Domingo being framed or having different motives makes one question how reliable our information about Domingo is. after all, we’ve only ever seen other peoples’ takes of his character and never anything directly from him. underscores did specifically state that she wrote the songs from the perspective of the people in wallsocket, but how much does her character really know from observation? rather than answering questions, this really raised even more around Domingo’s true situation.

after the release of the first Wallsocket era single, ‘Cops and robbers,’ underscord members started to theorize what the album might look like, including the possible number of tracks. a lot of members believe the rollout would be similar to that of fishmonger, especially with ‘Cops and robbers’ being declared as act i. this suggests the album will follow in fishmonger’s footsteps, with a 3 single rollout in the standard 3 act structure. some members went a step further and theorized there would be 12 tracks in Wallsocket, each one corresponding to a question asked in the Wallsocket era trailer.

additionally, april released a statement clarifying the significance of the ‘wrap back around’ question.

Hometown tour poster

        on June 9th, 2023, underscores announced her 2023 “Hometown Tour” alongside special guest performers torr and jedwill. this tour is her biggest one yet, with 21 locations spanning the US and color coded dates to highlight the featured guest performers on the right hand side (blue for torr, green for jedwill). on the left, there are a series of sketches drawn by elena fortune that depict various scenes. the significance of most of these scenes are unclear so far, but some of them are strikingly recognizable (joshua domingo running away with money on the first row, far left, mara albright staring through her window at her next door neighbor, s*nny, on the second row middle scene, and the familiar fireworks as seen in the cops and robbers mv that blew dewey up on the second to last row far right).

        the scenes are colored in sections of two rows each, starting out with secretariat blue -> yellow green -> sage green -> more saturated, wallsocket green

I definitely think that this poster acts as a “roadmap” or “storyboard” of sorts for the project but more context is required to make any substantial theories. however, I will attempt to theorize about the blue section as two of the scenes have already been uncovered. I think the top row uncovers a bit about joshua domingo’s past, with the middle sketch featuring him holding a horseshoe trophy indicating success, the right sketch depicting others chasing after his success. mara comes into the picture with her obsession with s*nny and her family because she most likely knows something that we don’t, and these scenes could be key to figuring out what those secrets are. also, the presence of joshua in the blue scenes suggests he has some involvement with secretariat (see Wallsocket's color theory). the license plate of the car in the second row, right scene appears to say “JOHN13”

underscord user benkybot commented on the religious meaning of John 13, saying, “John 13 is the chapter when Jesus washes the feet of his disciples and then predicts that Judas will betray them and Peter will deny that they knew Jesus”

The ‘You don’t even know who I am’ stalker

        On 6/7/23, the second single of Wallsocket, ‘You don’t even know who I am’ (Ydek) was released. The track is a fully finished version of the demo track titled ‘New world 2007’ that debuted at april’s Camp Boneyard set, ‘The Story of S*nny.’ In this finished version, the song is completely recontextualized, with the Soundcloud description stating, “Mara, romanticizing the girl-next-door S*nny’s rough upbringing, breaks into S*nny’s house and pretends to be her.” This description is a direct connection to the extended title of boneyard aka fearmonger’s ‘Tongue in cheek’: “S*nny, I Think the Girl Next Door has a Crush On You!”

        While the demo had the same themes of parasociality (with the lyrics being from the perspective of a dedicated fan’s thoughts addressed to the celebrity they look up to), Ydek brings this to a whole new level, adding an extra layer of creepiness to the track through additional verses. April, writing from the perspective of Mara, reveals her knowledge of S*nny’s personal life, “I know when your mom leaves / She goes to work at the crack of dawn.” Yet, Mara isn’t necessarily bitter that S*nny can’t reciprocate on this parasocial relationship. Moreso, she is bitter that she cannot be S*nny, as evident by the line, “It hurts that I'm not like you.” It seems that Mara is obsessed with the idea of living in S*nny’s shoes and experiencing her tragic life firsthand perhaps because she finds it so exciting. A quick look at the Waterworks Weekly site leads you to Mara Albright’s article on the Columbia Bank robbery, demonstrating her familiarity with the Domingo family and her passion for scandals.

Both the trailer and the music video contain cuts to illustrations of bullet wounds on a human target, suggesting the stalker was shot at.

Northwest zombie girl

on 5/18/23, Oxbow’s Market announced they were hiring through the Wallsocket e-mail newsletter. there are only two known people who applied for this position and were hired (confirmed through underscord; user net and nolanwall) but there may have been more.

according to net, the hiring process involved sending an email to Jennifer Powell and answering application questions. the applicants who got hired were sent a ‘training video’ titled “Oxbow's Market Employee Onboarding - Cashier Bagger 2016_update2.mp4” with captioned stock corporate style animated visuals and an underscores track as the background music.

this unreleased underscores track, which has been dubbed “Northwest zombie girl” by the community, features a nursery rhyme type introduction with crying:

        this ‘good luck’ tag has popped up in various places throughout the project, such as new world 2007 (ydek demo), the wallsocket trailer, and most recently, the newest unreleased track dubbed “my guy”

        northwest zombie girl seems to be a song about Xanny, a character previously seen in the ‘Cops and robbers’ mv browsing drugs on her laptop due to the reference of pills.

how do we know that the moms listed below are “original” moms you may ask? well, the way wordpress works, each author corresponds to a number. any mom that’s a registered user will have her own wordpress page (for example, https://momsofwallsocket.com/author/1/, https://momsofwallsocket.com/author/2/, and so on). we can see there are 17 moms because the 18th does not have a page. momsonas, which are purely comments from the fans and not registered users, do not have their own pages and therefore can be differentiated from the original moms.
