I shared my word attack skills of new words and important vocabulary by

  • naming my strategy (chunking, rereading, reading on, using the glossary)

  • demonstrating how I used that strategy to read a word with accuracy

  • then explaining what the word means

I can name my strategy and demonstrated how I used that strategy.

I need to next explain how I determined the meaning of this new word.

I can name my strategies and demonstrated how I used these strategies.

I can explain how I determined the meaning of this new word.

I can be flexible with my strategies and demonstrated how I used these strategies at different times for different purposes.

I can explain how I determined the meaning of new words.

I determined the main idea and important details of a piece of text  by

  • Chunking the text into sections using text features

  • Identifying the big topic the section is about

  • Supporting my thinking with details and examples from the text.

I can say the main idea in more than just a word and am careful to name the main idea of most of the text.

I can choose important supporting details that go with the main idea.

I can summarize briefly, leaving out unimportant things.

I can pause to summarize as a way to hold onto what I’m learning, saying the main idea(s) of that part and linking it/them to related

Points.

I can select points that are especially important to the idea.

I can use the primary

structure(s) in the text to

help me grasp what it mostly

Teaches.

I am careful to keep my own

opinion separate from the

ideas presented in the text.

I can figure out several

important main ideas in a text, and I’m aware that sometimes those ideas thread through the whole text instead of being located in chunks of it.

I can sort all the details

in the text and weigh their

importance so that I can also

discuss important details that best support each of the main ideas.

I am careful to keep my own

opinion separate from the

ideas presented in the text. I

also avoid mentioning minor

details.

I interpreted visual information (charts, diagrams, timelines, pictures) by

  • explaining what the visual information means

  • how it connects to the main idea

I can identify visual information to interpret.

I am beginning to explain what the information tells me and how it connects to the main idea of the text.

I can identify visual information to interpret and explain what the information tells me.

I am beginning to connect this information to the main idea of the text.

I can identify visual information to interpret and explain what the information tells me.

I then can connect this information to the main idea of the text.

I explained how two books or texts relate by

  • Collecting and combine information from the two books or texts (synthesizing)
  • Then stating those ideas in my own words (paraphrasing)

I collected information from two books or texts.

I am beginning to combine this information

I can collect information from two books or texts.

I can combine this information by stating their big topics or ideas in my own words.

I can collect information from two (or more) books or texts.

I can combine this information by stating their big topics or ideas in my own words.
