Lecture goals

Digital control is increasingly used for the implementation of control systems due to its advantages over analog control: lower cost, smaller size and better performance.

The objective of this course is to address the various aspects of digital control systems. After studying the sampling theory of a continuous signal, we discuss the modeling of sampled and discrete systems, their analysis as well as the synthesis of digital controllers.

Detailed outline

Part I Tools

  1. Introduction to system analysis and controller synthesis for discrete time signals and systems
  2. Signal sampling and reconstruction
  3. Z-transform
  4. Discrete-time transfer function, initiation to state-space representation
  5. Analysis of sampled systems: stability, Jury’s criterion
  6. Analysis of closed-loop sampled systems: Nyquist criterion, root locus

Part II Synthesis of digital controllers

  1. Objectives
  2. Control design by emulation methods
  3. Hold elements
  4. Pole placement
  5. Smith predictor
  6. Internal model control
  7. Algebraic synthesis: RST controllers
  8. Dead-beat control

Applications

  • initiation to matlab : effect of sampling
  • digital control of a thermal system,
  • digital control of a flexible arm,
  • RST control of a robotics actuator.

Acquired skills

The students will acquire the basics of sampling a continuous-time process, several discrete-time analysis methods as well as the synthesis of digital controllers. Tutorials sessions will allow them to apply these concepts while practical sessions will enable them to become acquainted with the implementation of a digital controller.
