The  Types of Software

The goal of this assignment is to ensure you have a clear understanding of the 4 types of software:

• Operating System
• Utilities & Device Drivers
• Applications
• Malware

Each question is worth 2 marks.

Part 1: Malicious Software

1. What are 4 types of Malware mentioned in class or in the video?  Find, copy and paste a one sentence definition for each from an Internet source.  Obviously these definitions should be similar to the ones in your notes but may explain each in a slightly different way.

2.  a) Find a statistic from the last 3 years for the amount of money lost… a) to cybercrime in general   & b)  to RansomWare

c) Based on the above numbers, it is clear that people get victimized all the time by sophisticated phishing attacks or trojan horse malware.  Based on your own Internet usage, which type of malware would you most likely fall victim too if you were not careful?  Explain something you do that makes you susceptible.

3. What is 2 factor authentication?  How does it reduce the likelihood of malware or hacking?

4. Find a famous Ransomware attack from the last few years. Then fill in the following:

5. Create a subject line and a few lines of body text that you think would fool someone (if you were a bad guy) into falling for a phishing scam.

Part 2: Operating Systems

6. The top 3 Operating Systems for Personal Computers (used by students in Edmonton) are a Windows OS, a Mac OS and Chrome OS.  Search the Internet and fill in the following chart:        

7.  Find a recent statistic that shows the Operating System market share of each company for Personal Computers.  (Market share is the percentage of all operating systems used).:

8. a) Find the market share statistics for the top 3 Smartphone operating systems.  Make sure the stats are from within the last 2 years as Smartphone percentages change quickly.

Part 3: Applications & Utilities

9.  Find the top 3 downloaded apps from either Apple or Android stores in 2020.

10. Utilities are programs that are needed but run either without you being an active participant or only when you need to do repairs. Define what each of the following utilities do.  Copying and pasting IS allowed as long as you understand what you pasted.
