What is IHSA Bass Fishing?

Bass fishing is a co-ed IHSA sanctioned activity
and continues to experience huge growth with
teams across over 350 of Illinois’ high schools
competing in the IHSA state series.

Who is HSHS Bass Fishing For?

Some schools run only a competitive team and some are strictly “club” based - we try to run a balance of both.  Our school’s Fishing team is for experienced and/or aspiring anglers. It is for students that want to learn how to fish or learn more about fishing presentations and techniques.

What Will I Need? (Next Year)

  • Register through HSHS Snap
  • Fishing Equipment (Rod/Reel/Tackle/Eyewear)
  • Fishing License if 16+
  • Maturity, Trust and Respect

             How Can I Learn More?

Google Hinsdale South Hornet Fishing

or go to

http://bit.ly/hsfishing

What Do We Do?

  • Have fun and learn how to fish (or level up!)
  • Meet Monthly. Fish! 2-3 times a week in Spring
  • Compete! (State Series and local tourneys)
  • Host tournaments! (Fall/Spring)
  • Attend and host seminars and conferences
  • Trips! From Canada to the Wisconsin Woods

What is the Time Commitment?

We’ll have a meeting or event once a month in the Fall and Winter and fish 2-3 times a week in the Spring before the Sectional Meet. The commitment is minimal in the Fall/Winter and moderate in the Spring. To fish in the Spring you have to join in the fall.

Where Do We Fish?

The simple answer is all over.  Mostly local Forest Preserves (Cook and DuPage). We try to get you to learn new spots around your community.

What if I’m in a Spring Sport?

Half of the students across the IHSA who fish are in another sport.  If you are in a Spring sport you are more than welcome to join and attend all functions before the Spring and make what you can.

Next Year!

We’ll have our 1st meeting in August!

  • I’ll email you if you signed up tonight.

Stop by once school starts (I’m in the library) or email me summer fishing pics!:

SOUTH  FISHING
TEAM  APPAREL

SITE: BIT.LY/hsfishgear                             ORDER BY: OCT 1

Hinsdale South Fishing is excited to partner with TPS Sports for our online apparel shop. We have designed a new fully custom sublimated team hoodie that will proudly display your last name. We will continue to offer additional apparel items on this site each season but I ask that your first apparel purchase when joining the team is the “team hoodie.”  We will take our yearbook photos and attend our large team events. The hoodie is designed to last you all four years so we suggest underclassmen in particular going up a size if you think you have some growing left to do. If you purchase a trucker cap Coach Bondi will provide you a hat hook.

  • DUE/BULK ORDER PRICING: To receive the bulk price-- orders must be in by October 1st!  After this time you may still purchase individual items through the site but you will see a price increase.
  • FUTURE TEAM GEAR: We will continue to expand the shop each season with  headwear/apparel options but ask that your first purchase when joining team is the “team hoodie” so we are all consistent no matter what year you join!
  • PAYMENT METHOD: Payment is made through the site and Coach Bondi does not deal with payment.

HSHS Bass Fishing Gear Recommendations
These recommendations assume you are a relatively novice angler, are fishing for bass and are not fishing live bait (which we do not). Having the highest end gear will not magically catch more fish but having decent gear will last longer, make it more likely that you cast accurately, sense a bite, and land the fish (all making fishing more enjoyable). I’ve tried to recommend just the basics below and I encourage you to fall in love with fishing first and grow your investment in the lifelong hobby as you get more into it.
You DO NOT need everything on this list. They are recommendations for you before you go looking to purchase gear.

Access this resource: http://bit.ly/getfishgear

License: Non-negotiable.If you are 16 or > during season you must purchase one by state law (and give me copy).

This is the standard “jack of all trades” rod that offers versatility and the 2-piece (splits in half) allows you to travel or place in a locker.

* You can purchase a rod/reel together at major retailers often at a decent price. Try to stick with recommendations on sizing above. Shimano, Daiwa, Pflueger are good brands to check out.

Learn  improved clinch knot

Pliers

Needlenose

Removing hooks (sometimes swallowed deeply) takes precision and a set of longer pliers. Always good to have your own with you.

Cutting Line

Get a pair of simple small scissors or nail clippers. You will constantly be cutting line, retying and cutting the ‘tag’ (leftover part after a knot) end of lures when re-tying.

Simple scissors
Better

Toting Gear

Start with small utility boxes to organize gear.

You’ll quickly realize lugging around gear isn’t much fun while shore fishing. Start with utility boxes and something small to carry them in on your back so you are hands-free!

Many of you have a ‘track bag’
Better

Rain Jacket

Opt for breathable over PVC

Fishing Chicagoland Spring can be cold and wet which can be miserable.  I’d suggest a thinner waterproof jacket and layering.

Breathable example

Eyewear

Cheap/Polarized

You must wear eye protection-polarized to reduce glare on water.

These are the first things I would put in your tacklebox. I tried to limit the recommendation to only 1 color/size to start you off. Obviously conditions such as water clarity, temperature, etc. all impact recs but this is a solid starting point.

IGNORE BELOW

MESSAGE HOME AFTER FIRST MEETING
My name is Jim Bondi, Hinsdale South Fishing Team Coach/Sponsor and today we were excited to host our 1st Meeting of the 25-26 season. This first meeting was during the morning of a school day and is not something we will do regularly. Today I passed out a hard copy intro packet that hopefully makes it way to you and includes the following information:

  • Overview of the team (who we are, what we do, when we meet, etc.)
  • Information on registering for the team on Snap (mandatory for every HSHS Team)
  • Information on our first events (Bonfire Social Next Saturday! - Sept 6)
  • Info on apparel ordering
  • Info on fishing licenses
  • Some gear suggestions IF your angler is looking to get gear (NOT a list of items needed)

The digital copy of this packet is in our calendar notes but HERE is another way to access it. Please ignore everything after page 9. If your son or daughter missed our meeting please have them stop by the TSI Room in the library before or after school to briefly touch base and get a copy of the packet - especially if they are new as I'd love to meet them in person.

For those of you who have already registered for the team - thank you. For those of you who have not, there is a page in the packet on how to do this. You do not need a physical for our team. HERE is the link to HSHS Snap  if needed.

For our new parents...Our primary season is in the Spring but I enjoy trying to offer one large Fishing team event each month in the 'off-season.'  These events are almost always offered during times in which it is most likely that our student anglers in other sports or clubs have the opportunity to attend.

New this year is an online apparel shop. Every year we have offered different apparel and it has been challenging to get so many students to have a consistent item for pictures and large team events. To solve this issue we will offer a 'team hoodie' every year moving forward that I ask is the first item purchased by students so we all have this one foundational team item for yearbook photos. Since this is the first year we will not offer additional items. Moving forward next season students who have been on the team, already have their team hoodie and wish to order additional items will have that opportunity as we build out this shop. Orders are due Oct 1st.

Your angler will eventually require a fishing license if aged 16 or above by state law. These licenses are available for purchase online and through local retailers and the following year licenses open up March 1st every year.  For instance if your angler is 16 now and doesn't have a fishing license they would need to purchase one to fish in Illinois. These licenses expire yearly on March 31st. I have directions in the packet - but suggest paying the extra couple of dollars to purchase online so students can print multiple and go back to reprint them as needed. I will always ask each Spring for a copy to be sent to me digitally.

I have a couple teen students myself who are very involved and understand and appreciate the value of communicating home. Especially since our team will often host events that may not have actual street addresses! My hopes are through ParentSquare communication and the ParentSquare calendar that mirrors the one in our Fishing Team Website you will not have any questions about the what, when and where of our events. Be warned I do schedule a great deal of announcements. You can change your settings in the ParentSquare app as needed.

I look forward to another great season and meeting all of the new anglers and families. You are welcome to stop by and drop a line or attend an event as your schedule allows. Since our  primary season is in the Spring I’ll schedule either a digital or in-person angler/guardian meeting prior  to preview how we run our Spring season but a nice preview for our families is that after Spring Break we will get out on the water as a team on Tuesday/Thursdays (after school - fish close) and Saturdays (rotation of times - a bit further away).

Best of luck to the students and families in the new transitions and please feel free to reach out as needed.
