Establish Goals

  • to encourage a sense of community, collaboration, citizenship, inquiry, responsibility and student-led interests to act as a model and framework for our classroom community.
  • to understand that respectful and effective communication both offline and online builds relationships
  • to show the students how global connections can enhance their learning and understanding
  • to introduce Minecraft as a platform for learning to students and parents
  • to create a Minecraft club at ISL for Grade 1 students

Your goal is to communicate with others to plan, model and then build your own community in Minecraft.

You will set your own learning goals and reflect on these throughout the project.  


You will create a community in a group and show your understanding of what collaboration means to you. You will be a communicator, designer, thinker, problem solver, organiser, expert, presenter and supporter.


Classmates, Parents, Grade 4 blogging buddies , Grade 1 class in Kuwait


It is the beginning of the school year and you will be learning how to communicate and collaborate with your classmates to build a happy and successful learning community. You will agree and write guidelines of how we do this and we will try to apply these guidelines throughout the year


In a group you will create your own community in Minecraft, invite others to join and share your community You will agree and write class guidelines based on this project to display and share with others.

We will all reflect on the learning that took place and make suggestions for future projects.

Students will present their project through blogging, iMovie, Touchcast Adobe Spark, oral and written reflections, coaching others, and writing community guidelines for the class


Students will evaluate and  self-assess respectful and effective communication happening in and out of class and interpret how this can help build  online and offline communities


Students will apply  their guidelines everyday in the classroom and when they are online

Students will make connections with others through blogging and compare experiences on collaborative projects

Provocations for communication and getting to know you activities to explore different ways of communicating whilst also developing technology skills with the students

Introduce popplet- formative assessment what do they know about how we can connect to others

Task 1: make a popplet showing what you understand about communication

Introduce the talking corner-show students how to make a video and upload onto Youtube

Task 2: students to make a video called:Things I want the teacher to know about me

Introduce Kidblog to students and parents as a way of communicating, learning and sharing. Model posts and commenting.

Task 3: Learn to write simple posts, upload videos and photos and begin to write blog comments

Task 4: Students to watch videos of their collaboration and communication skills from our field trip and self-assess, deciding on a personal goal for the rest of the project.

Task 8 Skype Ms Abby’s class with questions and then reflect on how we are connected.

Task 9 Make blog posts in groups, answering questions from Ms Abby’s class

Introduce Minecraft project to students. Give them time to:

  •  sort out groups,
  •  ask questions about the task
  •  decide on what kind of community they wish to build
  •  finalise what their personal goal will be

Task 10:  Follow google slides to show they can: start new world in creative mode/find a flat piece of land, name their world, build 2 shapes

Task 11 Students plan on paper their communities, assessing what they will need to do throughout the project. Students start building in Minecraft

In groups, design their community on paper, model, using whatever they choose and then build in Minecraft. Students to plan and keep track of their project using planning wall

Students continue building and monitoring their project and personal goals whilst working collaboratively

Task 12:Students listen to Ms Abby’s videos about themselves and make connections to 2 or 3 students

Students write a blog post about their shared interests with students in Ms Abby’s class

Groups reflect on the project and their personal goals and write class guidelines in a blog post .

Task 13 Students use Touchcast to make short reflections on the project, their personal goals and on their learning
