For years Lebanon has suffered severe shortcomings in the most basic public services but since October 2019 the country has been in a downward spiral. Today the unaffordability of food in Lebanon is a bigger threat to people’s survival than the coronavirus.
Rampant inflation has gripped Lebanon for the past months pushing 50% of the population below the poverty line. In the past week it has reached a critical level, resulting in a public suicide in the middle of the street, many more in private. This time last year 1,500 LBP = $1, today it is 9,200 LBP = $1, an inflation rate of 613%.
