Instrumental Department is excited to announce a one-week music camp for all incoming 7th and 8th grade band and orchestra students! The camp offers a full Instrumental experience, small ensemble opportunities and a variety of exciting music electives. Join us August 7-11 at Baker Middle School for Sound Power! A week of musical excellence.
Who: Students enrolled in 7th or 8th Grade Band or Orchestra for the 2017-18 school year
When: August 7-11, 2017
Time: 9:00AM-2:45PM Daily
Location: Baker Middle School
Tuition: $150(price includes Sound Power! T-shirt)
Tuition Savings! Register and submit payment before June 2nd and save $25
Lunch: Lunch for the week will cost $30, or you may bring your own lunch daily.
Menu: Alternate between pizza and sandwiches each day. Fruit, snacks, dessert and beverage provided daily. Vegetarian options available.

Sound Power! 7th and 8th Grade Elective Descriptions
All students will learn about various music genres, performers, and traditions during fun, interactive activities after lunch together in a large group. Students will be able to earn points for their “team house” as they learn about music history and performers.
Elective Choices (students will take two of the following):
Composition – Students will learn to compose their own music using notation software in a computer lab. Open to all students. No experience necessary.
iPad Ensemble – Students will learn to collaborate in small groups to perform music together on their TSD iPad. Students should download the Garage Band app prior to camp. Students will perform provided fun pop music as well as create their own “grooves”. Open to all students. No experience necessary.
Percussion Ensemble – Students will perform a varied repertoire of percussion music including traditional percussion ensemble literature, novelty percussion (buckets anyone?), and instruments from other countries. Open to all students. No experience necessary.
Ukulele – Learn how to play the ukulele through learning chords and popular songs. Ukulele provided. Open to all students. No experience necessary.
Improvisation – Students will learn how to create and play music on their instruments instantly and play their new creations with each other. This improvisation class is not jazz based, although some jazz ideas and tricks may be used. Open to all students. No experience necessary.
Songwriting – Students will learn how to create songs with lyrics within a chordal structure. Open to all students. No experience necessary.
Secondary Wind Instruments – Open to all band students that would like to try a new secondary instrument over the summer. For students interested to try a new instrument to play in band or to start learning a new instrument for their 8th grade jazz band class. Instrument provided. Instrument choices are oboe, bassoon, French horn, trombone, baritone, and tuba. Saxophone also available for interested future jazz band students.
Secondary String Instruments – Open to all orchestra students that would like to try a cello or bass over the summer. Instrument provided.
Jazz Band – Open to all students who currently play trumpet, trombone, saxophone or a rhythm section instrument (drum set, piano, bass, or guitar). Students will learn a few jazz tunes and learn more about this American tradition. No experience necessary.
Fiddlers – Open to all orchestra students. Students will learn how to fiddle and learn a few tunes in the fiddling tradition. No experience necessary.
Electric Strings – Open to all orchestra students. Students will learn how to create electric loops using electric string instruments and technology.
