Your guide to getting involved in environmental action - for people and the Earth 🌎
Why it is important to get actively involved in the environmental movement for climate action: It’s a weird time to be a human right now with so many issues and inequalities in the world and constant negative news and events. When it comes to both global and local issues, climate change is the leading threat to human life of the 21st century and is already affecting food supplies, water security, shelter, safety, conflict, human health, income, and survival of many communities around the world. The impacts of climate change are not spread equally, with those who have contributed the least to causing climate change being affected the most and already being severely affected today, while countries in the global north, such as Ireland, will be among the last to experience severe impacts despite having contributed a lot more to causing the climate crisis. We can’t effectively or permanently solve all the other important issues which are affecting humans today without also making sure we have a safe and healthy planet for us all to live on. I know the constant negative climate news, climate doom, and the thought of the different climate events ahead of us can be SUPER overwhelming, and that it can be tempting for us here in Ireland to try and avoid this news and hope that someone else will take action against climate change and fix this problem before extreme impacts become everyday issues here too. But no one is going to make the necessary changes to secure a liveable planet unless each and every one of us gets involved, in our own way and in whatever capacity we can, to call for the urgent and effective changes and demand sufficient action to secure a liveable future. Without addressing current levels of emissions, pollution, unsustainable development, unsustainable investments, and the major lack of climate action, huge sections of our planet will become uninhabitable and will no longer be suitable for humans to live - and that is expected to happen during our own lifetimes in this century, putting billions of lives at risk, unless rapid action is taken. I know this is scary, but by channelling these overwhelming feelings of fear, anger, climate anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness into creating meaningful action and using our energy to get involved where we can, we can work together to really hold our policy makers accountable and make them take responsibility to create the necessary system changes we need to ensure effective sustainable development which supports both people and our planet. To make these changes happen and to even have a chance of securing a liveable planet for our own futures and the futures of everyone who will come after us, it will take as much of us as possible to get actively involved in calling for climate action – in whatever way we can, whatever capacity we can, and whatever area we can.
