THIS. IS. SCIENCE QUEST! Compete against  your fellow classmates while you have fun learning science and living life! The following are your tasks. You must complete each task to the best of your ability, show what you learned by completing the task, and provide sufficient evidence that the task was done and done well. The proper criteria for each task is listed below. It is up to the Quest Commander, Mrs. Hanson, to determine if the task was completed according to the standards. Then, and only then will you be awarded the points. The point value is found next to each task. Complete them all, complete only some, complete them more than once… it is up to you.

Experience Points

Science Points

Scientific Article -350pts - Find and read an article from a science magazine, a science news website, or just your everyday newspaper. It could be about a recent scientific breakthrough or discovery, or the scientific explanation of an occurrence. The topic of the article does not have to relate to the content you are learning in class. Then, write a brief, but thorough summary of the article. The summary needs to have good grammar and spelling, at least a half of a page long, include a link to the article, and it needs to include your opinion of the what the article discussed. Type your summary in a Google Doc, then copy and paste the sharable link.You will submit your summary in the XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You WILL NOT turn in a handwritten summary.

Scientific Show -350 pts- Watch a show that has a scientific theme. This could be on the National Geographics Channel, Science Channel, Discovery Channel, a YouTube Channel, or a documentary movie. If you are wondering if what you watched is XP worthy, ask Mrs. Hanson first. Then, write a brief but thorough summary of the show. The show does not have to be related to the content you are learning in class. The summary needs to have good grammar and spelling, at least a half of a page long, and it needs to include your opinion of the what the show discussed. Type your summary in a Google Doc, then copy and paste the shareable link. You will submit your summary in the XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You WILL NOT turn in a handwritten summary.

Research Paper -400 pts- Ever wonder why something is the way it is or how something works? Research it! Come up with a topic that interests you. If you are wondering if it is XP worthy, ask Mrs. Hanson first. Then, after you do some heavy research, write about what you found out! The topic does not have to be related to what you are learning in class. Your research paper needs to have good grammar and spelling, at least a FULL, single spaced, page long, and it needs to include all you learned and your opinion of the topic. Type your summary in a Google Doc, then copy and paste the shareable link. You will submit your summary in the XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You WILL NOT turn in a handwritten summary.  

Make a Model -400 pts- Models are tangible, visible representations of an idea. Make a model that represents a concept you are learning about in class. You can use any materials to make your model. Your model can be a “working” model, which means it has moving parts and operates like the concept you are modeling. Or your model can be a sculptural model simply representing an idea. You will bring your model to Mrs. Hanson for grading before the end of the unit to which your model relates. Then, you will submit an XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website telling a little bit about your model.

Write a Lab -400 pts- Science labs help demonstrate a concept and allow hands on learning. Write your own lab for a concept you are learning in class. Make sure to include all the aspects of the scientific method, mention any materials that need to be used, and write some questions for thought. This lab will be written in Google Docs and turned in before the end of the unit to which your lab relates. You will copy and paste the Doc’s sharable link into an XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You WILL NOT turn in a handwritten lab.

Kahoot/Quizlet -200 pts- We use Kahoot and Quizlet to study and review for tests. Make your own Kahoot complete with questions and answers that will help you and anyone else who uses it to study and review for the test on the current unit. Or, make your own Quizlet cards either with vocabulary or questions and answers. Your Kahoot/Quizlet will be turned in before the end of the unit to which it relates. You will copy and paste your link into an XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Concept Presentation- 200 pts- Sometimes the teacher doesn’t have the best way of explaining things, sometimes students know how to explain things better to other students. Create a visual presentation over a concept you are currently studying. You may use any portal you wish, for example, Educreations, Google Slides, Prezi, Adobe Voice, etc. You must fully explain the concept, use proper vocabulary, include images, text, and it must be at least 2 minutes long. You will copy and paste the presentations link into an XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Interview a Scientist - 300 pts- Scientists are all around you, they may not have thick glasses, a lab coat, or a nobel prize, but there are people all over that work in the science field. Interview a scientist from any branch of science. You can make up your own questions, but we want to know, what branch they work in, what their specific job is in that branch, how long they have been apart of it, if they are responsible for any breakthroughs or theories, how they got to be in the field, and advice they have for aspiring scientists. You will record your interview in Google Docs. Your interview must have answered the questions above, have correct grammar and spelling, and include your opinion on the interview and the branch of science discussed. You will copy and paste your link into an XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Scavenger Hunt- 150 pts- The science you are studying is happening all around you in real life! Keep a lookout for anything that is related to what you are currently studying. Take a picture or a video of the occurrence. You will receive 150 XP for each submission you make. Submissions will only be accepted during the unit to which the picture or video relates. You will show Mrs. Hanson the picture or video either on your phone, camera, or print. Then, you will submit an XP form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Grade Points

3 Assignment Streak -300 pts- If you receive a 90% or higher on 3 assignments IN A ROW in science you will receive 300 XP. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You will list the 3 assignments by name in the form.

5 Assignment Streak -500 pts- If you receive a 90% or higher on 5 assignments IN A ROW in science you will receive 300 XP. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You will list the 5 assignments by name in the form.

High Quiz Score- 200 pts- If you receive a 90% or higher on any quiz, vocab or content in science, you will receive 200 XP. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You will state the quiz by name in the form.

High Test Score -500 pts- If you receive a 90% or higher on a chapter test in science, you will receive 500 XP. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You will state the test

No Late Work - 150 pts - If you have turned in all your homework for the week, you will receive 150 XP. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. Submissions need to be made by Sunday night before the new week starts.

Honor Roll - 1000/1500 pts - Making the honor roll is a big deal! It means you worked very hard all semester and learned a lot! If you make the teacher’s honor roll, you will be awarded 1000 XP, the principal honor roll recipients will receive 1500 XP. You will still need to submit an XP form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

No Conduct Marks -500 pts- You can earn 500 XP if your report card shows no conduct marks. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Behavior Points

No Office Visits -150pts- How you behave is more important than learning reading or math or exercising your brain! You can earn 150 XP if you manage to stay out of the office. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

No Send outs-150pts- You can also earn 150 XP if you are not sent out of any teacher’s room for misbehavior. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Spirit Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Attendance Points

No Tardies - 150 pts - If you were on time to school every day of the week you can earn 150 XP.  You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

No Tardies for the Quarter- 600 pts- If you were on time to school everyday for the entire quarter, you can earn 600 XP. You will only earn points if you submit an XP form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Offering -500pts- Being a good steward, and giving God back a portion of what He’s given you is a part of being a faithful follower of Christ. If you brought chapel offering at least 5 weeks in a quarter you will receive 500 XP. You will need to let your teacher know that you brought offering so they can keep track. Then, you will submit an XP form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Sunday Attendance - 800 pts- If you attended Church or Sunday School every Sunday during the quarter you will receive 800 XP. You will turn in your attendance card after you submit an XP form on the Scinece Quest Page on Mrs. Hanson’s Website.

Extracurricular Points

School Activity - 200 pts- Being a part of this school is a privilege and you should want to support our school and all of our students.You can show your support by attending a school event such as the talent show, a basketball game, a band concert, etc. You will bring a handwritten note signed by a parent saying you completed this task. Then, submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Scinece Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Help a Teacher -250 pts- Your teachers do so much for you and all of them have so much to do. They can all use a little help. If you see a teacher needs help, offer to assist. Or simply ask if they need anything done that you are able to do. You can do this during the school day or after school. There may even be some more XP in it for you if the task is done after school. You will have the teacher write a handwritten note signed by that teacher saying you completed this task. Then, submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Art Points

Art Project - 200 pts- Scientific ideas can be expressed in many ways. Create an art project depicting a concept you are learning about. You can use any medium, any form of art to show what you know. You will turn the project into Mrs. Hanson then submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Poem -250 pts- Show what you know in a poem. Write a poem about a concept you are learning about. Your poem will be turned in before the end of the unit to which it relates. You will only earn points if you submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Narrative -250 pts- People experience the exact stuff you are learning about. Write a story including the scientific concepts that you are studying. Your narrative can be written in first or third person, it will be a fictional piece with accurate scientific information or events included, and will have fictional characters. Your narrative will be turned in before the end of the unit to which it relates. Type your narrative in a Google Doc, then copy and paste the sharable link. You will submit your summary in the XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You WILL NOT turn in a handwritten narrative.

Reading Points

Success Book -350- There is more to life than science. Read a book that will help you become a successful human being. Then, write a brief, but thorough summary of the book. The summary needs to have good grammar and spelling, at least a FULL, single spaced, page long, and it needs to include your opinion of the what the book discussed. Type your summary in a Google Doc, then copy and paste the sharable link.You will submit your summary in the XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You WILL NOT turn in a handwritten summary.

Physical Activity Points

Hiking -150 pts- Science is all around you. Go enjoy nature, breathe in the fresh air, observe everything around you by taking a hike. Go with a friend or family member enjoy each other’s company and the great outdoors. You will bring a handwritten note signed by a parent saying you completed this task. Then, submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

RecPlex Class -150 pts- Let’s get physical by joining other people in a workout. The Recplex offers workout classes every day of the week. Mrs. Hanson teaches yoga on Saturday at 9am and Monday/Wednesday at 6:30pm. Most classes have an age restriction but students of all ages are allowed to join yoga. You will bring a handwritten note signed by a parent and the instructor of the class saying you completed this task. Then, submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Marathon/Walk -200 pts- March for Dimes, Walk for Epilepsy, Oklahoma Memorial Marathon, Color Run, and more! These are just a few walks/marathons in which people walk or run for a good cause, or just for fun! If you enter and participate in a walk/marathon, you will receive 200 XP. You will bring a handwritten note signed by a parent saying you completed this task. Then, submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Point Based Points

High Score -150pts - At the end of every week, all of the points will be added up for each individual student. If you have the most XP in your class, you will receive an additional 150 pts. You will submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Critical Thinking Points

Invention - 300 pts- Life is going to throw problems at you, what you do with them says everything about you. Come up with an invention that is not currently in use or out there that solves a problem or makes life easier. You may create a working/non working model or simply draw the invention. You will write a summary of the invention in Google Docs including the problem it solves, how much it will cost, and who you will market it to. Your model or drawing will be handed in to Mrs. Hanson but the link to your summary will be submitted on an XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website. You WILL NOT turn in a handwritten summary.

Design an Experiment - 300 pts- We all have questions everyday about why things happen or “what would happen if”. Design an experiment and maybe even carry it out to answer these questions. It could be as simple as a blind test or taking a poll. Write up the procedure in a Google Doc. Copy and paste the shareable link into an XP Form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Community Points

Plant a tree- 300 pts- We are supposed to care for God’s earth. One of the best things you can do for our planet is plant a tree. If you help your family, church, community, etc plant a tree you will receive 300 XP. You will bring a handwritten note signed by a parent saying you completed this task. Then, submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Environmental Care- 250 pts- We need to care for the planet that God has given us. If you intentionally go out and pick up litter, clean up a park, plant a garden, etc. you can receive 250 XP. You will submit an XP form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website where you will describe your task. You will also need to turn in a handwritten note from a parent or adult witness.

Community Service - 250 pts- Caring for those around you and doing things for other people is one of the best things you can do. If you participate in a community service project with your church, family, friends, or just by yourself, you will earn 250 XP. You will bring a handwritten note signed by a parent saying you completed this task. Then, submit an XP Form indicating you have completed this task on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.

Act of Kindness -150 pts- Being kind and loving not only shows God’s love to those around you but it can make you feel good too! If another middle schooler does something kind for you and you recognize it, you can submit an XP form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website explaining how they were kind to you and earn them 150 XP.

Free Choice - ?pts- If you have an idea that you think may be worth some XP, ASK! If Mrs. Hanson agrees to the activity, she will award points based on how much she think the activity is worth. You will still submit an XP form on the Science Quest page of Mrs. Hanson’s website.
