Encourage. Develop. Lead. KSM Volume 1, Issue 2
We are a group of individuals who all have a passion for using the limited resources available to us in a wise manner. The goal of the group is to help spread the word about sustainable activities, influence sustainable change in our community, and to continue to grow our knowledge about sustainable practices. We meet monthly, on the third Thursday of the month, at the Kearney Public Library and discuss ways we can help influence and create sustainable practices in the community.
What have we done and what is to come?
We’ve officially launched the KSM newsletter, with this newsletter being the 2nd issue. Every month, around the 2nd week, we will release a newsletter bringing updates on the Kearney Sustainability Movement and key tips that everyone can use to better their own sustainability efforts. Check the Kearney Sustainability Facebook page or scan the KSM QR code if you see it at your local business.
Moving forward, we are continuing to reach out and connect with other local groups that have passion for sustainability. We recognize that by working together, we can achieve higher goals in promoting sustainability. We intend to spread the word of local sustainability events and projects in the community on our Facebook page and volunteer man hours when possible. The spreading of knowledge and information is a key priority for the Kearney Sustainability Movement.
Preserving resources can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. But being Sustainable also means being mindful of our own personal resources.
We’ve all been there where we had a craft project and just needed one item or a specific tool for 30 seconds to complete the task, but we were forced to buy the whole bag of items or needed tool, costing more money and creating more clutter in the home, which will eventually lead to more trash heading to the landfill.
Luckily, there are places in Kearney where you can buy just the one craft item you need or get access to the tool you need, without the extra cost, clutter & waste.
- Visit TinkerHollow (218 W 18th St, Kearney) or view their Facebook page to see a local store that will allow you to buy the craft item you need, without having to buy the whole bag.
- At our own Public Library, schedule time in the Makerspace to utilize equipment such as 3D printers and sewing machines. Just go on the Kearney Public Library website and go to the tab “About” and under Library Services, you will see Makerspace.1
By going local, not only are you supporting local business and our own Public Library, but these options provide a budget friendly and cost efficient way to get what you need done, while also being sustainable as you don’t purchase excess material or tools that end up cluttering your home and eventually generating extra waste.
February 16th, 6:30pm at the Kearney Public Library
- We will have Beth Arens, from Nebraska Forest Service, guest speak.
