Dear Mr. De Laszlo,
On behalf of the Vice-Presidents, Joint Councils and all official members of the People’s League of Health, I am writing to thank you for your very great generosity in making us such a splendid gift [13294]. I am sure that the fact that we were able to announce your gift in the Press and notices of the ball attracted a large number of people and helped greatly towards our success.
Please accept my very sincere thanks.
Sincerely I sign myself,
Olga Nethersole
Hon. Organiser
Editorial Note:
De László had agreed to paint the winner of the costume pageant at the Empire Ball, where guests were required to dress as a representation of the Empire or one of its great figures. The event was held 30 April 1924 to celebrate the Empire Exhibition at Wembley and to raise funds for the People’s League of Health. Sir Cecil Harcourt Smith, Curator of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and John Walter (1873-1968) [7651], proprietor of The Times, awarded first prize to Adeline Walker dressed as New Zealand [13294].
