The Washington Oak Elementary Media Center provides teachers and students with access to information resources and professional support to access the resources to improve teaching and learning.
The Washington Oak Media Center strives to create a positive educational environment where learning and teaching are fostered through a love of literature and development of information and digital literacy skills.
The staff of the Media Center collaborates with all members of the school community to integrate information and digital literacy skills into teaching and learning. The staff of the Media Center continuously advocates for resources and programs that promote and support teaching and learning.
SERVICE POLICY DESCRIPTION
The Washington Oak Elementary Media Center serves a community of 580 students in grades pre-K through five and a staff of 72 teachers and support staff. The Media Center is open during all school hours as well as fifteen minutes before school officially starts and fifteen minutes after school.
Service to students is promoted through the Media Center website, through a parent listserv as well as notices and displays. The Media Center strives to assess the information needs and recreational reading interests of students through discussions with students. The Media Center strives to access the information needs of teachers by active participation in curriculum meetings and frequent communication with teachers.
Students and staff are instructed in the use of electronic information resources, including the online catalog, the Destiny automation system and statewide information resources through ASKRI including World Book and EBSCO. The enjoyment of reading as a lifelong learning skill is supported by personal interaction and reading guidance between the media specialist and the library user. The Media Center website, book fairs, booklists and hallway and Media Center displays support this effort to help students develop a love of reading.
Borrowing privileges are extended to all members of the learning community. The circulation period is one week but resources can be renewed. The Washington Oak Elementary Media Center participates in Interlibrary Loan though RILINK.
