TASK 1                        OBSERVATION BOX DRAWING

Aim: In these 2 drawings you will need to observe and record the box shape using both pencil and pastel. You will apply one/two/three point perspective in order to achieve correct proportion. Tone and texture will be added to give light/dark/shadows and form.

A. A3 paper and PENCIL (Begin with HB and use 4B for tone and texture)

Steps

  1. begin by looking at the box/boxes observe the shape, identify the closest edge of the box, how many sides can you see?, what texture does it have?
  2. identify whether one/two/three point perspective is appropriate
  3. sketch lightly the construction lines, start with the closest edge of the box and add the rest by following the correct perspective. At this stage the box should be transparent (able to see all sides)
  4. Evaluate, once you have your correct shape, add TONE and TEXTURE to give form.

Hint: know where your light source is coming from.

  1. Evaluate, change and add highlights of light and dark. Use eraser to give light highlights and darker pencils(5B/6B/8B) for darker highlights.

B. A3 paper and Pastel (one colour plus black and white = Monochromatic)

Steps

  1. begin by using pencil and record the box/boxes in the correct perspective (one/two/three point perspective)
  2. once you have your correct outline you will add pastels
  3. select one colour (red, blue, yellow, green etc…) plus black and white
  4. You can either begin with your mid tone colour (red, blue, yellow, green etc…) first then add black and white for dark and light highlights OR begin with your dark tone (black pastel) and then add your mid tone (red, blue, yellow, green etc…) OR begin with light tone first then and then add your mid tone (red, blue, yellow, green etc…) and then with dark highlights.
  5. Remember to blend by mixing the pastels. Pastels will blend with each other, you can also use your fingers to blend and you can scratch into the layer of pastel to give texture.

Hint: experiment with pastels on another paper to get a better understanding and confidence.
