Dear Mr. de Laszlo

How good of you to send one those charming reproductions of your portraits of the King [9123] & Queen [likely 9126] & little Princess Elizabeth [10531] – thank you many times – they are a great addition to my collection.[1]

I am so glad to hear that you saw that wonderful Coronation Service

in Westminster Abbey. In your Artist’s nature [illegible] have greatly enjoyed the Medieval atmosphere of both the service & the colouring. I thought the King in his Cap of Maintenance & simple vestments was a great inspiration, & a great & beautiful contrast to the Queen’s simple little unadorned [brown?] head!

Yr. sincerely

C. Strathmore.

[1] De László’s pendant portraits of the Duke and Duchess of York [9123] [9126] were widely reproduced in the press, particularly at the time of the coronation in May 1937, when the Duke and Duchess were crowned at Westminster Abbey as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
