Story overview

We are participating in a huge story about a group of defectors and an organisation that might or might not be beholding them and their antics. The defectors are originally from East Germany before German Reunification and they know each other well enough to have been invited to this forum. At some point it was exclusive and then not and then was again. It had many conversations and a mod that preferred that we focus on the topic of the forum. Moderator-chan nuked the forum whenever the conversation diverted enough to derail the entire subject. We play some odd role in all of this as harmless observers that are trying to understand the organisation, this forum and how everyone plays a role in this massive story.

And there’s a conspiracy theorist who everyone always kinda shuts down because his ideas are insane, which then leads him to eventually find something in 2001, telling everyone and then disappearing.

There's the bit where one of them 'finds something really gay' and then goes 'aaaargh I've been dumb, avenge me if I vanish' and then vanishes after sending some cryptic messages.

I used to teach at a DDR-school. I have to admit that the political influence was too big.

(20/03/1995, 14:17) Einsamernarr@internetnews.local replies

And it’s not only politics! The censorship will only get worse. In those days we all had to accept that the DDR was better, no matter what we noticed about the Wall. Now the oppression is worldwide! There are already self-sufficient hydrogen engines that could replace gasoline cars overnight, but the Elite conceal that intentionally, so that we all hold on to the state infrastructure. That was part of the deal that the Soviets made with the Western powers. They are allowed to continue to supply oil if they act as if they had granted their satellite states their independence.

(21/03/1995, 15:31) SandmannS@internetnews.local

Congrats @Einsamernarr. I have to block this thread before someone sees this nonsense.

The simplicity of DDR films is what I miss. Look at Star Wars. It started off so well, but "A Phantom Menace" is just CGI trash.

Manchester

  • Location of The Magnus Institute in The Magnus Protocol

The Magnus Institute was an organisation dedicated to academic research into the esoteric and the paranormal, based out of Manchester, England. It burned to the ground in 1999. There were no survivors. Now, almost 25 years later, Alice and Sam, a pair of low-level civil service workers at the underfunded Office of Incident Assement and Response, have stumbled across its legacy. A legacy that will put them in grave danger.” (TMP official website)

BerlinSpiderman moved to Manchester

(10/09/1997, 19:45) BerlinSpiderman_UK@internetnews.local

Any news @UberAmpelmann_US? When I moved to Manchester, the local community centres offered Workshops for people looking for employment, but I don’t know whether there is something like that in New York?

(17/02/1994, 10:00) BerlinSpiderman_UK@internetnews.local

I live in Manchester, but the basics of job hunting haven’t really changed. Just get a good CV that’s converted to the British format, no photos!

IronCurtain moved to Manchester

(25/02/1994, 10:00) IronCurtain_UK@internetnews.local

Since moving to Manchester, I started to hike. The landscape is incredibly beautiful and the history of this place is fascinating. Has anyone else found a new hobby since they left?

(17/02/1994, 13:15) IronCurtain_UK@internetnews.local

Yes and no. In Manchester I still get condescending jokes, but people seem to be open to learn. Most of the time people try to be compassionate, but they don't really understand it.

(03/12/2001, 21:55) BerlinSpiderman_UK@internetnews.local

Can I suggest Manchester? I could help everyone to find an accommodation that has a bit of a DDR-vibe?

  • alchemy; the main characters dad dies in an explosion following alchemist experiments (character cue Coppelius)
  • fire and heat motive; following the main characters descent into madness?

2 || German children's show on KIKA (childrens TV channel)

  • where an adorable little guy puts "Schlafsand" ("sleeping sand") into the children's eyes supposedly making them sleepy
  • An unaired episode was filmed by the first DDR cosmonaut in space, while in space.

3 || Character Sandmann in this

Surveillance

1 || Stasi (‘Staatssicherheit’) secret police

Found: In the TMagP trailer from last year (unsolved, RQ said it needed more context and couldn’t be solved at the time)

  • Mapped on a 26 x 10 grid it makes a weird letter Z kind of like it was rotated clockwise 20 Degrees.

In chemistry/alchemy

  • Partially translates to ‘PHOSPHORUS HYDROGEN TUNGSTEN’
    via
    https://www.cachesleuth.com/multidecoder/ under elements
  • discussed the possibility that the numbers were oxidation numbers” (Quote: Luke (Notafuckingmermaid) on the Discord server)

 442 038 143 355

When combined, the file names of the images on the OIAR create this series of numbers.

Each has a numerical code in the file name (as does the logo at the top)

  • Logo: 1.442
  • Legals: 2.038
  • Careers: 3.143
  • Contact: 4.355

442 038 143 355, if formatted as a phone number is +44 2038 143355 OR 02038 143355.

When the above number is called:

[robo voice, female] “You have reached the Office of Incident Assessment and Response. We are currently engaged in system assessments and upgrades and as such cannot accept new messages at this time. This process should complete by Friday the 22nd of September. Thank you for your patience. Realise, Report and Respond with the Office of Incident, Assessment and Response.”

(a few seconds pause)

[robo(?) voice, masculine] “Thank you.”

[human voice, masculine] “Thank you. Good-bye!”

There is a second variation for the ending:

[robo voice, masculine] “Thank you. I’m sorry, an error has occurred.”

Pressing 0:

Please hold while I try that extension. The person at extension 6000 is unavailable.”

(long pause)

”Thank you, good bye.”

Pressing #:

(beep) “Thank you, good bye.”

Youtube video with the message: https://youtu.be/_4szkuJ0dTc

Calling on Sept. 22nd

We have received the code:

49 59 27 56 58 39 27 56 49 26 58 58 18 49 37 58 19 30 58 56 59 37 56 39 49 59 39 26 56 39 28 47 48 PLATINUM

With a 5x5 alphabetic cipher, this decodes to:

ST GEORGES BOOKSHOP WORTHER STR BERLIN

The platinum symbol suggests it pairs with September 30 11:00-19:00 (which are in fact the shop’s operating hours that day).

Calling on Sept. 25th

The call gets answered by static noise, before ending with a BEEP.

Currently undergoing investigation in the SR ARG Discord.

DO NOT CALL ANY OTHER NUMBERS BUT THE INITIAL ONE ABOVE, DO NOT PRESS *, IT IS NOT PART OF THE ARG

Possible morse codes from the video

When setting a 1000Hz filter on the audiofile from the YouTube video, clear beeping can be heard from 0:16 onwards, which is also when the Mercury symbol appears in the video. Current theory is that this could give us the login information to the urclna-page, since it also has the Mercury symbol. Different sound gates filter out some beeps, and there is pitch variation. The beeps vary in length and spacing, making Morse Code difficult to apply.

Possible morse codes from the beeps:

  • TToTMTMTJTO
  • IE6SEH5
  • IET5SEBEJNES
  • AN#UEBT@KNB
  • ITT5DEI
  • LEDRUTDTATNES
  • IEDSSTL
  • ITDIEUTD
  • AET5SDERM
  • AETSDERM
  • AAAA …?

EXTENSIVE audio wizardry was ultimately able to coax URCLNA20891928 out of the morse.

The tone filter could also be applied to the podcast ad audio.

Another possible purpose for this clue: using a 1000Hz tone for “phreaking,” an early form of hacking where you played recorded tones into a phone to get the phone system to do stuff. The OIAR phone number will be able to take caller input on 9/22.

1000Hz is also known as 1KHz.

After finishing the ARG, we got the following information in the sr discord server:

The Morse at :16 in the YouTube video was meant to be Morse for the URCLNA password. We had it play tested with our editors and they were able to decode it. Unfortunately, in trying to make it a little more accessible, a couple of days before the start we wanted to boost the volume bc it sounded too buried and we worried no one would notice. I upped the volume and slowed it by 10%, but mistakenly put it over the compressed audio that caused the distortion, this was the version y’all ended up getting.

So y’all were right, and we added the tumblr header and icon after realizing

it was unsolvable, and tried the 1000Hz hint to see if that would help totally my fault - but holy cow are y’all determined and how close you got was so impressive (genuinely i would not have noticed what I did wrong if I hadn’t been watching y’all work the way you did)

This correlates to Sept. 30th in 1995, 2000, 2006, 2017, and 2023, this year. Are the bolded years most relevant?

Colin’s Email

Some users who emailed colin@office-of-incident-assessment-and-response.org.uk received the following message from him at ~ 9:40 ETC:

Subject: Change of email address

I’ve swapped this email to an auto-respond after some smartarse gave my email to spammers.

If you’re contacting me about work, hold fire. I’m sending everyone the new address a.s.a.p.

Access via telnet:

Windows: >How to use telnet on Windows<

Linux: >How to use telnet on Linux<

telnet tnet.office-of-incident-assessment-and-response.org.uk 10023

After spamming a number of commands, the client seems to glitch out.

Cinnabar ‘🜓’ is spotted in the error message.

‘Print 4 7’ returns base 64, this being Freddies personal PGP key.

For more see >BonzoBazaar<.

Further investigations:

MUD "DOS Terminal" Cracking Thread/Saga

dokumente@freiheitentschluesseln.de

Originally discovered through the hidden usenet threads, see >Hidden usenet<.

Returned Dokumente.7z and Oxygen Alchemy symbol upon messaging.

Auto Mail on Oct 5th

At 10:25 pm (GMT) an automated Email was sent. No subject. All it includes is a gif of the corner symbol from Of the Generation of things.pdf.

When dismembered, the single frames show the Earth Alchemy Symbol, as well as binary code.

For further information see >OtGot<.

Dokumente.7z

File name: dokumente.7z

Found through hidden paragraph that contained login details for an additional usenet thread: emailing “dokumente@freiheitentschluesseln.de

Open with: (please add to this if you know more paths)

Windows: winrar, 7zip, breezip

MacOS:Unzip One (on the mac app store)

Linux: file-roller, 7z x dokumente.7z -pPASS

Link to download: https://freiheitentschluesseln.de/.versteckte-dateien/dokumente/dokumente.7z

Criteria the password should theoretically meet: (list can be added to)

  1. Can be found by the other usenet users (or at least those in the i.members part)
  2. Hints posted after 15/12/2001, 03:32 OR part of the Date anomalies

It’s rather unlikely to be related to einsamernarrs own password (D83W!tz), though the encryption might be similar. Furthermore it’s unlikely to be directly from the OIAR website, as there is no obvious link the other usenet users could follow yet, in compliance with criteria 1.

Password attempts that Do Not Work now on >this document<

Dokumente password is: DDRDONOTTRUSTACHTNEUN

Found through Colins Code Collection. Was encrypted with Playfair cipher in the “out” folder.

Exif data gives the modification date 15/12/2001, date einsamernarr posted his last message on the usenet (see >Hidden usenet threads<).

Prosocial

Low/Moderate/High

Introduced in the 70s by scientists as an antonym to antisocial

“Prosocial” = social behaviour, that benefits others or society as a whole (helping, sharing, donating, obeying rules; such as stop signs). Motivated by empathy, concern about others well-being.

Sally-Anne

Fail/Pass

Theory of mind! How children can relate to others and project beliefs, both false and true, onto others.

Ultimatum

Unfair/Fair

Ultimatum game. Introduced by Werner Guth and colleagues in 1982

Take-it-or-leave-it in bargaining environment. Two people get randomly matched (proposer and responder). Proposer is given money and has to share with responder. Responder decides whether to accept or decline. If accepted, both get to keep their share, if declined, nobody gets it.

Milgram

Low/Moderate/High

After Stanley Milgram (1933 - 1984)

Conducted experiments on obedience to authority. Participants were instructed by an authority to act as “teachers” and push a button to deliver an electric shock when the “learners” got a wrong answer. The shocks increased in intensity over subsequent trials. The study measured the extent to which participants were willing to keep pressing the shock button after being reassured by the authority figure.

Asch

Low/Moderate/High

After Solomon Eliot Asch (1907-1996).

Conducted experiments on conformity to a group. The Asch line study is the most infamous. Participants were shown several straight lines on a paper and asked to indicate the length of a target line relative to the others. This experiment was done in a social setting with confederates. The confederates all agreed that the line was shorter/longer than the others (regardless of its actual length). The study measured the degree to which participants were willing to conform to the group opinion despite their own perceptions of the target line’s length.

The Bonzo error image on Bonzoland: It's Bonzo Time! has the filename “03:00;03:00;03:00;03:00;03:00;03:00;03:00;03:00.png”. Basically no EXIF data except name “terms.html” and title “The Magnus Protocol ARG”. The page terms.html does exist on the site, but it appears identical to join-the-brigade.html (error-page).

At 03:00 UTC, there was a refresh of the Bonzoland website. It came with this image (content warning for creepy!!!)

Allegedly, there’s a video, but uhh this archive assistant (it’s Goose! hi!) cannot get the page to refresh to save her life, so the picture will have to do. Enjoy.

It was accompanied by an audio file with the filename being the Alchemy Symbol for Day/Night that turned out to be a spectogram. The spectogram was found to say “1st of October, 2023, 13:00 - 16:00  BST.”

The Magnus institute

The Magnus Institute was an organisation dedicated to academic research into the esoteric and the paranormal, based out of Manchester, England. It burned to the ground in 1999. There were no survivors. Now, almost 25 years later, Alice and Sam, a pair of low-level civil service workers at the underfunded Office of Incident Assement and Response, have stumbled across its legacy. A legacy that will put them in grave danger.

IRL event 1: Newspaper

Found on Saturday, 30th September 2023. In between two seemingly random cookbooks. Saint George’s English Bookshop, Wörther Str. 27, 10405 Berlin.

The location of the dead-drop was discovered through the OIAR telephone number.

see: >Calling on Sept. 22nd<

The time and date have been found in the picture of the Cookbooks in the usenet thread.

Original Newspaper

>here<

The newspaper contained ‘🜃’ on multiple pages (2, 3, two on 4, 5, 6). When looking at these pages and comparing them to the original newspaper there were differences which gave the following coordinates.

53°27'56.0"N 2°16'03.8"W

The building we’re placed in front of belongs to the Church of Scientology as of 2007. Before that, it was a Duckworth's Essence Distillery building, where essence and flavour were made. Built in 1896. Now abandoned.

IRL event 2: Polaroids and Floppy discs

Found on Sunday, 1st of October 2023. In two book-safes hidden in the little free library. Cinnabar Wharf Central, 24 Wapping High St., London.

The location of the dead-drop was discovered through the strangehaunts.uk tumblr.

see: >Strange Haunts UK (tumblr)<

The time and date were found on the 3 am Bonzoland website.

see: >Images<

The timeframe was later updated via the official ARG website.

Connected through the Alchemy Symbol Day/Night.

The book-safe displays the Alchemy symbol 🝰. The code to open the booksafe was 123, as in Bonzoland’s address (this is a theory!! It might be an easter egg, or actually the connection, but it is not official, as we found the password through sheer brute force).

The polaroids display various hardly recognisable subjects including but not limited to a graveyard, bushes, an underground station, and a wooden fence. They are severely singed and cut in places.

The floppy discs include a corrupted picture.

BADF.jpg

It is a picture of the Boy and Dolphin Fountain in Hyde Park, London.

(not corrupted picture: >here<)

It shows a time, 14:00 - 16:00, as well as the tin Alchemy symbol ♃.

Further, there is a document called Klaus.xls, which includes the tin ore Alchemy symbol 🜩 as the title of the sheet.

Klaus.xls

klaus.xls

The sheet lists different occurrences, possibly paranormal sightings and activities. Many of the panels are displaying [Datenschaden] (data damage/corruption).

The page is labelled with the Alchemy symbol Tin Ore.

One of the dates lies in the near future: October 7th 2023.

IRL event 3: Wingdings and Dame M

Happened on Saturday, 7th of October 2023, 2 pm (BST). London, Hyde Park, next to the fountain displaying a boy and a dolphin.

The date of the event was taken from the Klaus.xls sheet.

see: >Klaus.xls<

The location and time were found on the floppy discs.

see: >IRL event 2<

Connected through the Alchemy symbol Tin / Tin Ore.

On Location was an actor, holding a clip-board which displayed the Alchemy symbol Tin, dressed in a smart black suit and sunglasses, and wearing an earpiece.

They were approached by our field researchers and then asked for a one-on-one conversation. The following is the transcription of a video taken by one of our field researchers.

(Note: this is the second time this conversation happened. The first one was not recorded. It included a few more pieces of information, which are listed below.)

Agent- "I've just been given this by my lady."

Player- "By your lady? Okay, yeah."

A- "Would you like some help?"

P- "Yes, please."

A- "Okay. Unfortunately I can only speak to one of you at a time. If you can allocate one person then I will take you and give you some information."

P- "I'm happy to go."

A- "I won't take you far."
(they go a few steps)

A- "So I believe you are part of the investigative team?"

P- "Yes, I am." (overlapping)

A- "You've discovered some clues."
P- "Yes we have."

A- "I understand. Okay. My lady would like to make it clear that no more investigation into Lady M should be done. However, we are able to give you some information if you can promise that that will be the case."

P- "Yes, I absolutely promise."

A- "Absolutely. Okay. Please come with me. (slightly inaudible)"

P- "Of course."

A- "Ma'am, am I able to give this person the clues?" (pause)

A- "Understood. Okay, may I just have one more confirmation you are not to look into Lady M anymore."

P- "Of course, of course."

A- "Very good. I will hand you this... And there is to be no more discussion about this furthermore."

P- "Yes, of course." (overlapping)

A- "Understood?"

P- "Thank you, thank you."

A- "Thank you very much, enjoy your day."

P- "Thank you very much."

The first conversation included the following information not given in the above one:

  • demand not to give their names to strangers
  • “If your investigations reach a dead end here, we will be happy to help”
  • all investigations could have dire consequences

The following information were given to our team as a whole:

  • (after being asked why they were here, to which they responded with they’ve found clues) they’d ‘followed the missives’
  • “May I leave you with one last piece of information? 7 pm.”

The Klaus.xls sheet had the remark “Dame M” (EN: “Lady M”) in line with the date that led to this event. This Lady M is most likely the person above referenced to as “My Lady” and “Ma’am”. We have reason to believe that she is connected to Lady Mowbrey, who was featured in the TMP voice actors list. (Note: this is speculation only and not proved.)

The player was given an envelope with the following contents:

IRL event 4: Tape #3 DO NOT VIEW

Found on Sunday, October 8th 2023, around 12:25 pm (BST). Dead-drop found at a property owned by Scientology, abandoned for years.

The date and time were found through the Of the Generation of things.pdf and the gif sent by dokumente@freiheitentschluesseln.de.

see: >OtGot<, >dokumente@<

The location was found as coordinates in the Newspaper from the Berlin dead-drop.

see: >IRL event 1<

Connected through the Alchemy symbol Earth.

As the Tape was singed and the video badly corrupted, we got the video containing the final clue via a new tumblr post.

Dead ends / Confirmed Unrelated

Codes in the cat picture thread of the UseNet server:

They are just a formatting problem, and not actual codes.

Archived from codes:

These are possibly demarcations for the nntp protocol used for the forum and refer to the message Id instead of any actual code. All messages in the Katzenbilder thread (except the first message) has a —-------<CODE>-- part under the message (view the message source to see this code at the bottom), all messages that dont have an image in it display the code in plaintext, this is just part of multipart that acts weirdly in this scenario (https://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc1341/7_2_Multipart.html). Basically rendering all listed codes as useless as they are just part of the email protocol

The codes beneath the cat forum pictures are likely MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) codes that only show up due to a formatting error, and are probably meaningless.

Sudden changes in brightness in the Youtube video

We suspected that the sudden changes in brightness in the youtube video (starting at 00:16) might have been morse code or smth. Checking the original footage confirms that the brightness changes is in the original, and was not added by RQ:

THANK YOU

As a fun little finish of the document [and because it grew on me so much that I don’t want it to end] I thought to write up a small thank you note.

The past few weeks have been awful. The sheer amount of Ups and Downs that can happen in the span of less than a month is incredible. So, we’re saying thank you.

Firstly, of course, to Rusty Quill Ltd. Without you guys all of this would never have existed in the first place. Thank you; for years of entertainment, and for providing a place for a community to grow. Thank you for spending time and money and effort and nerves on creating complex puzzles with clues scattered across the UK and Germany, which led for people to meet, from all over the world, who otherwise would probably still be strangers. And of course, thank you for not giving up on us, no matter how many times we broke the newest toy [clue] provided.

Then, there are the mods. You guys are truly fighters. Thank you for providing us with a safe space to discuss, theorise, and occasionally goof around. Thank you for your endless efforts to keep us to specific channels, and keeping a cool head when everyone went crazy over new clues. Thank you for watching out for us and our safety, while being part of the team. You are our heroes.

Of course, an enormous shout out goes out to all our diligent ARGhivists, as well as the numerous people who created documents, threads, and graphics, so everyone could follow along complex thought processes. You helped to shape this place into a community, a place where people help each other, and enjoy working together. Thank you, for your tireless work.

Now, I can’t possibly forget our fellow players. To put it short: thank you for playing! To put it long: thank you; for putting time into the ARG, for sharing your knowledge, for keeping the thing going. Regardless whether you were a Red String Weaver, a Code Cracker, a Temp. Archivist, part of the Cheer Cardet, or even hopping channel and thread and document to help out here and there; we seriously appreciate you. Weeks we spent together in the Discord, racking our heads, getting frustrated about morse and tone frequencies, connecting names to locations, years to events, reading and re-reading hundreds of translated emails, learning about Alchemy, code, and ciphers, s̶i̶m̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶s̶e̶v̶e̶r̶a̶l̶ ̶s̶t̶r̶a̶n̶g̶e̶ ̶e̶n̶t̶i̶t̶i̶e̶s̶  and so much more. And of course I’m not forgetting those who were actively helping in the subreddit or other community websites. Thank you for being part of the experience.

And lastly, a Thank You goes out to all our silent watchers. To those, joining late, those who were too busy to actively help, but always cheered us on. To you - yes, you! - reading the document right now [and putting up with me being all sappy in the supplemental]. Thank you, for believing in us.

Now, back you go to the Discord Server, or your reddit hole, or wherever you came from! TMP is approaching!

And don’t forget:

  • C over and out
