Here are the basic marks:

The Dot or Blob

One dot means there’s a trail.  It might not be True Trail, but a hare was here to lay it.

Checks

Checks are circles.  They might have a dot of flour in the middle—this is for the FRBs to kick in the correct direction so that DFLs can follow trail without re-doing all the checks.

Checks mean Trail can go in ANY direction.  369 degrees.

Checks are always on True Trail.  (Exception: Check Backs).  Checks cannot be laid on a false trail.  If you find a check, you are on True Trail.

3 dots after a check means True Trail, with the exception of a Check Back.

Check Back

The Check Back is a complicated mark.  It is a number next to a Check.

The Check Back indicates that you must re-trace the trail you followed for the number of Dots indicated.

Count Dots back without regard to other checks or marks.  The Dot number is absolute.  True Trail resumes at the Nth Dot.

Example:

Here is the Trail you followed:

(Check,4 dots; Whichy, 3 dots, Check Back 7)

You would re-trace your steps 7 Dots back, even though you passed a check with 3 Dots after it (normally True Trail; in this case, not) and a Whichy with at least 1 Dot after it (also normally True Trail).  Trail would resume somewhere at the first Dot that followed that first Check.

Arrows

Arrows mean nothing.  They are a directional suggestion.  Hares lie.  

Arrows with only 2 dashes are trick arrows and are NOT True Trail.

THREE dots after any arrow is still True Trail. Exception: Check Backs.

True Trail Arrows

Arrows with 3 dashes are True Trail.  Always.

Whichy Way / Hydra

Whichy Ways and Hydras are similar; Trail can go only in the directions the arrows are pointing.  Whichies have 2 arrows; Hyrdras have 3+ arrows.

ONE Dot after a Whichy or Hydra arrow is TRUE TRAIL.  Exception: Check Backs

YBFs

You’ve been Fucked!  This indicates the end of a False Trail.  At a YBF, return to the last Check and search for True Trail.  A YBF can be the letters, or a straight line.  Sometimes 3 lines. Depends on how much flour the hares have.

Not all False Trails end with a YBF.  Sometimes they just disappear and you won’t find any marks.  YBF marks are a courtesy from the Hares.

Turkey Eagle Split

This does not mean “Tough and Easy.”

Turkey is the bunny slope—an easier, shorter trail, geared for walkers and slow runners.

Eagle is the triple diamond—long, hard, full of false trail and a ballbuster.

This split will result in two trails.  Both directions lead to a BN or ON IN, just by different routes.  Turkey Eagle splits, like Checks, are only on a True Trail.  False Trail can commence after a T/E mark, but the mark itself is on True Trail.  

Beer Near and On In

These marks are placed within eyesight of the Beer Truck’s location.  When you see this mark, rejoice!  It is True Trail and Beer is Near.

Beer Near is the “halfway point,” or pitstop on trail.  There is more trail after this; there will be a second “hares away,” but the hash takes a break and has a beer.

On In indicates the end of the Trail.  Get a beer and gather for Circle.

Unique Marks

Other marks exist in the hash and Hares are welcome to invent their own.  New marks (and, theoretically, old marks) must be declared at Chalk Talk and explained by an RA before On Out.

The most important rule of hashing is: there are no rules.

Hares will stray from these suggestions.

They will also just fuck up laying trail.
